CTOBER 24, 1957 THE IWHCHIGAN DAILY ~TOBER 24, 1937 THE MICHIGAN DAILY GRID SELECTIONS While you're wondering why all the teachers schedule tests for next week, take a little of your time to enter this week's Grid Picks Contest. It could even be more valuable than studying. After all, no one can say that they ever won two tickets to the State theater by studying instead of entering Grid Picks. Next week's feature at the State will be Frank Sinatra in "The Joker Is Wild," the life story of comedian Joe E. Lewis. Last week there was a three way tie for first among The Daily's staff of "experts." The leaders were Bruce Bennett, John Hillyer and Al Jones, all three of whom came up with 13 correct picks. Holding down the anchor slots and having a rough week were the guest staff and Si Coleman. Take these facts for what they're worth, but as you know, anything can and usually does happen on the national collegiate football scene. All you have to do to 'enter this fabulous contest is take the 20 games listed below, pick the winners, and take a wild stab at what you think will be the score of the Michigan-Minnesota game. After you have completed the entry either bring it in yourself, have your instructor drop it off while you are taking the test, or put a little three-cent stamp on a letter.# Any way you do it make sure it is dropped off or postmarked before 5 p.m. Friday. Mailing address is "Grid Picks," 420 Maynard. CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING p.____________________________________ PHOTO SUPPLIES TRANSPORTATION Beautiful first-line RIDE WANTED: N.Y.C. NEW YORK (P)-Fred Haney, who led the Milwaukee Braves to their first pennant and world championship, yesterday was! named National League Manager of the Year for 1957 in the annual' Associated Press poll. Haney won in a close vote over Fred Hutchinson, pilot of the sec- ond-place St. Louis Cards. The Redbirds were in a challenging position until the final week of the season. Haney received 90 votes and Hutchinson 84 of the 180 that were cast by members of the Baseball Writers' Assn. of America. Mayo Smith of the Philadelphia Phillies was named on five ballots and Bill Rigney of the New York Giants on one. Tebbetts Draws a Blank Cincinnati's Birdie Tebbetts, the NL Manager of the Year in 1956, did not receive a single vote. Although selected most likely to win the league championship in pre-season estimates, the Braves were dealt one damaging blow after another. At various stages: of the cam- paign they were without the serv- ices of first stringers Joe Adcock, Eddie Mathews, Johnny Logan and Billy Bruton. September Streak Wins Still, Haney brought his club on with a rush and it broke the race wide open with an eight-game winning streak in mid-September. The past season was the 59-year- old Haney's eighth as a big league manager.. He led the St. Louis Browns from 1939 through 1941 and Pittsburgh from 1953 through 1955. Except for the last two years, none 'of his major league teams finished higher than sixth. priced from $10.95 THE QUARRY '320 South State NO 3-1991 )D11 HEILAND Strobonar speed flash unit, hardly used, from research project.
