O. 'Fritz' Crisler." "His successor is to be former Wolverine All-American Chalmers 'Bump' Elliott, imported- from Iowa this year as backfield coach." By SI COLEMAN In its second to last practice before the game with Minnesota, the Michigan football squad was forced indoors yesterday by an all-day driving rain. Only at intermediate periods did players emerge outside to the soggy fields where there was more room for them to practice pass defense. But throughout the afternoon, units continued to run through a variety of plays in the cramped confines of Yost Field House. Bowers, Prahst Ailing With only two days remaining before Saturday's clash, the physi- cal condition of the team takes on added iimportance. Generally the team is in good condition, but Dave Bowers and Gary Prahst are ailing slightly. However, both of them are sure to see action Satur- day. John Herrnstein is still hobbling around and will not play. Another doubtful starter is right halfback Mike Shatusky who is still both- erefi by his back injury. It is not known whether he will even make the trip to Minneapolis. ' Myers To Start With Shatusky out, it pushes into prominence a sophomore from Evanston, Ill., Brad Myers. Myers looked good last fall on Wally Weber's freshman squad. However, he was somewhat, of a disappointment during spring Purdue Star Takes A.P. Grid Honror By The Associated Press A couple of sophomore guards, Fred Brandel of Purdue and Rod- ney Breedlove of Maryland, waged a spirited duel of ballots for Line- man of-the Week honors before the nod went yesterday to Brandel. Brandel won the weekly Associ- ated Press poll of sportswriters and broadcasters for* his key play in Purdue's stunning 20-13 upset of Michigan State, then ranked as the country's No. 1 team. Recovers MSU Fumble A 19-year-old 200-pounder from Hamilton, Ohio, Brandel recovered an MSU fumble on the Spartan 19 in the second quarter that paved the way for Purdue's tying touchdown at 7-7. It was the turning point of the game, Purdue Coach Jack Mollen- kopf said afterwards. "After that we knew we had them." Stars before Queen Breedlove, another 19-year-old youth, was a standout as Maryland upset North Carolina 21-7 before Queen Elizabeth II of Great Bri- tain. practice until the final Intra-squad game. When this season began, Myers was rated evenly with Fred Julian at the right half position, behind Shatusky. But as the season pro- gressed Myers moved up to the second team. Touchdown Nullified He got his big opportunity last Saturday against Northwestern when Shatusky was sidelined most of the game. Myers scored the first Wolverine touchdown of the con- test, only to have it nullified by an offside penalty. The blond Evanston youth has also blossomed into quite a pass receiver. After the first three games this season Myers had grabbed off three tosses, good for 51 yards. In the Northwestern game he.made a spectacular catch on a pass thrown by his former high school team- mate, Stan Noskjn. Boasts Speed, Power In addition, Myers is a fast run- ner with ability to either drive through the line or break to the outside. He can also punt as he. has done twice this season, com- piling an average of 43.0,per try. And so when Saturday rolls around the fans in Minnesota's stadium will see a comparative newcomer lining up for the Wol- verines at thet right halfback slot. But if predictions come true, great things are in store for this blond sophomore from Evanston. Rangers Top Maple. Leafs NEW YORK ('P)-Dean Prentice1 triggered the New York Rangers' in a 3-0 victory over the injury- riddled Toronto Maple Leafs last night as goalie. Gump Worsly' gained his first shutout of the{ National Hockey' League season.' Prentice scored twice and Guy Gendron produced the other goal as the Broadway Blues moved into third place ahead of idle Chicago.. SOPH STARTER-Scheduled to start at Minneapolis. Saturday and a fast starter when handed the pigskin, right halfback Brad Myers has been a pleasant surprise to the Michigan coaching staff. Piston' 3ow to Celtics In Motor City's Opener 1 Professional basketball returned to Detroit for the first time since 1947, with the home town Pistons bowing to the defending world champion Boston Celtics 105-95 in the second game of a double header. A crowd of 10,965 fans showed up to watch the Celtics win their second game in as many tries. In the first game New York handed St. Louis its second defeat of the young season, 112-95. The victorious Celtics were led by their giant center Bill Russell who scored 15 points and Bill Sharman who was high scorer in the game with 24. Russell's main value however was his tremendous defensive play as he completely controlled the backboards. Yardley Leads Pistons The .Pistons were led in the losing cause by George Yardley with 22 and 7' Walter Dukes who banged In 19 points. The Pistons' chances for victory were shattered when Dukes and Yardley both fouled out within moments of each other in the fourth quarter. Boston then went on to sow up the game with basket after basket. The Celtics sunk 36-92 from the floor and 33-47 from the foul line while the- losers were respectively 33-96 and 28-41. The high humidity in Detroit's Olympia caused the ice under the floor to melt and the condensation made the court slippery, which hurt both teams in fast breaks. MSU Tp Conference Both Wa CHICAGO (IP)-Although knock- ed from their top national football ranking by Purdue, Michigan State's Spartans continue to lead the Big Ten both on offense and defense. Official league statistics Wednes- day disclosed that although Ohio State is the top scoring team with a 38.5-point average, Michigan State holds a wide margin in yard- age with a 446.6 average against 391.5 for the Buckeyes and 392.5 for Iowa. Defensively, the Spartans have yielded an average of 185 per game in three league contests, allowing only 3.3 yards per play from scrim- mage. -i s, I BLUEPRINT OF YOUR FUTURE - NHL STANDINGS W L' Montreal ......... 4 0 Boston ........... 4 2 New York .......3 2 Chicago 2 4 Detroit.......... 2 3 Toronto .......... 1 5 TODAY'S GAME Boston at Detroit T 2 0 1 1 0 0 Pts. 10 8 7 5 4 2 1 Of course you are thinking of the I ( I CAPER.
