Williams' .731 average was the highest for the majors in 16 years. Williams collected 307 total bases in 420 times at bat, figures com- piled by The Associated Press dis- closed yesterday. Among the 39- yr.'-old outfielder's 163 hits were 28 doubles, one triple and 38 homers. Williams, who also won his cir- cuit's batting crown, had the pre- vious high slugging percentage-- .735 in 1941. The big league record is .847 set by Babe Ruth in 1920. Williams also finished on top in the slugging competition in 1942, 1946, 1947, 1948, 1949, 191 and, 1954. Mays Slugs .626 Mays slugged .626, edging Stan Musial of St. Louis and Hank Aaron of Milwaukee. The Giants' centerfielder had 366 total bases in 585 trips. His extra base output included 26 doubles, 20 triples and 35 homers. Musial wound up with a' .612 percentage on 307 total bases in 5012 at bats while Aaron was third at .600 with the most total bases in either league, 369, in 615 official trips. Aaron had 198 hits and 77; were for extra-bases--27 doubles, six triples and 44 circuit blows. Slugging averages are computed by adding the total bases on all hits -one for a single, two for a double, etc.--and dividing the ag- gregate by the number of official times at bat. Mickey Mantle of the New York Yankees, the American League slugging champ in 1955 and 1956, was second this time with a .665 mark. He had 28 two-baggers, six triples and 34 homers among 173. safeties. CAMERA REPAIR Complete service on all makes. Beautiful firs projection sci 'S BY DON DRESCHER The Detroit Lions, crushed by Baltimore by a 34-14 score three weeks ago, are only one-point underdogs in the rematch of the two teams this Sunday. Part of the reason for the even- ness of the odds, despite the three- a touchdown defeat earlier, can cer- tainly be attributed to Lion full- back John Henry Johnson who was1 injured at the time of the first encounter. Johnson has since proved to be a potent weapon in the Detroit offense. Shaky irOpener The Lions forward wall, shaky in the season opener, has since stiffened and if it can give Detroits two capable quarterbacks, Tobin Rote and Bobby Layne, some room to maneuver the picture may look quite different Sunday. Baltimore, meanwhile has been rolling along quite well under the direction of quarterback 'John Unitas. The Colts field general is the leading passer in the pro cir- cuit. He has connected for eight touchdown passes in the three games the Colts have played to date. Two League Leaders' The Colts have two other league leaders in their array of stars. Jim Mutscheller, former Notre Dame end, tops the scoring department with a total of 30 points, and rug- ged halfback Lenny Moore has been bucking the opposition to the tune of 6.8 yards per carry. With standouts like these and a stiff line to boot, it's small wonder the Colts have compiled a total of 100 points to date, twice the total of the second highest team. And at the same time the Baltimore defense has yielded only 99 yards for a scant 1.4 yds. per play. Buddy Parker's Steelers are be- ing given a shot in the arm this season by the acquisition of for- mer MSU quarterback, Earl Mor- all, from the San Francisco Forty- Niners. Out of 78 attempted passes, Morall has completed 38, for ,a sum of 621 yards. Jack McClaren and Jug Girard, former Detroit star, have been do- ing most of the receiving. Girard has also been doing a considerable amount of the kicking for the Pittsburghers. (recently merged with Better Vision Center) 240 Nickels Arcade - - .
