Each year Scroll offers a $100 scholarship to a junior affiliated woman, based on leadership, char- acter, scholarship and need. Scroll also promotes cooperation between alumnae and college students and works to further interest in cam- pus activities. Wyvern, Also a local honorary, Wyvern taps coeds at the end of their sophomore year. Wyvern members are chosen for participation in ac- Stivitles, character and scholarship. Members, wearing yellow slick- ers, tap during dinner time, chant- ing the traditional, "Damn, damn, damn to Michigamua, to hell with Sphinx and Vulcans too, to the Druids and the rest, for we know we are the best. We are Wyvern's daughters tried and true. Wyvern dates to years when only a few coeds were on campus; its purpose was to look after in- coming freshmen, serve as guides and answer questions. Its name is taken from an old Welsh word meaning "protecting dragon." The symbol for member- ship is a gold pin in the form of a dragon curled around the letter Circle Circle, newly formed. indepen- dent honorary sponsored by As- sembly Association, tapped for the first time last spring. Its two-fold purpose is to recog- nize women who have ,excelled in leadership, citizenship and service within residence halls, and to stimulate and promote interest within these areas. The first initiates of this honor- ary were selected through recom- imendations by house directors and house councils. Tribe initiation ceremony is staged- around the sacred Tappan Oak near the library. All new members are given Indian names along with their own names, such as Nailum Hard, Scratchum Feather, Heap Wiser and Cagey Cougar. Newly tapped members must withstand hours of -exercise and repeated cold water baths before they are considered worthy to "Speak-um Indian talk and speak- um wisely. Speak-um slower and think-um what you sayum."r Druids Founded in 1910, Druids tap junior men who are enrolled in all the undergraduate units of the University except the engineering. college. Initiates are recognized for outstanding leadership in ac- tivities or varsity athletics. New members are dressed to, resemble young trees. Their imtia- tion ceremony is characterized by the- watering of the young "sap- lings" until they grow into mighty trees. The transformation takes several hours. Joyce Kilmer's poem, "Trees," WANDERING THROUGH THE HALLS "KEEP-UM HEAD DOWN!" is chanted during the ceremony and new members are given names which typify their personalities such as Blocking Busting Butter- nut, Go Getting Ginkgo, Singing Sycamore and Hard Hitting Holly- hock. Old members, staunch and mighty oaks, are regally attired in robes and hoods for the initiation, Vulcans Campus leaders and outstand- ing athletes who are juniors in the College of Engineering are tapped for membership in Vulcans, found- ed in 1904. Gleaming black greased bodies of the initiates and flaming torches which light the symbolic anvil near the Engineering Arch char- acterize the initiation ritual.
