The club practices each week day evening at the Union pools and swims its home meets Saturday mornings at the Wonfen's Pobl. Less heralded but equally as talented as Michi- gan's traditionally championship men's swimming teams are the co-ed swimmers splashing and div- ing for the Ann Arbor Swimming Club. The club is coached by Jiose- Mary (Mann) Dawson, daughter of Michigan's ex-great swimmingg coach, Matt Mann, who coached 14 National Championship Michi- gan teams and the 1952 United States Olympic Team. Mrs. Dawson is a swimming and diving instructor at the Women's Pool and coaches the Ann Arbor. Swim Club in the Union Pool from. Swim meets are held each Saturday morning. Not Official 'U' Team, -Women's swimming in the Unit- ed States is predominately AAU Club Swimming and is the reason why the team is not an official University swimming team. It is hoped however, that a substantial number of Michigan co-eds will 'try out' as the swim club is the only real chance for Michigan women to .compete in the club equivalent to inter collegiate com- petition. "Not only is competitive swim- ming the best exercise for a wom- an to keep her weight down," Mrs. Dawson says, "but women who have swum before coming to col- lege deserve a chance to continue their swimming. It just doesn't make sense for women to become 100% spectator athletes the day they enroll in 'college." "Besides," says Linda Meyers,, who is the club's star free style sprinter, "competing in t h e s e meets is fun." The club in its third' year is Michigan Girls, Swim Lea- gue.and Michigan Novice Cham- pion with 'a string of nine dual meet victories without defeat: Seven Meets This year there are seven Satur- day morning fall meets with other" swim clubs from the state and a league championship Nov. 30. All the dual meets, beginning, last Saturday, will be held on home football Saturdays at the Wom- en's Pool so the visiting teams can go on to a Michigan game. Perhaps the outstanding woman swimmer on campus and. the star breast stroker on the team is Emily Covell, a junior medical student and a perennial Michigan State Champion. Miss Covell and Misse Meyers arp joined for meets by outstanding co-ed divers who practice with coach Bruce Harlan and: his championship men divers. at the University Pool. 6th Place in, Diving Karla Klump, a sophomore from New York finished sixth this sum- mer in tower diving at the Wom- en's National AAU's and Kathy Hartwig, a freshman from Minne- sota, was National AAU Junior Champion in springboard diving. -'The club claims to be the answer for the women who have been, complaining because the Univer- sity doesn't 'allow girl cheerleaders jr inter-collegiate sports for wom- en.
