' 1 Illini Spvt4 Comment BY JIM BAAD I1 ; 11 . 11 f/r * 1~. 11 State's Best Game IT'S THE BEST game we've played against Michigan since I've been coach." This was Hugh "Duffy" Daugherty's casual locker room compliment to one of the most powerful teams that Michigan State has ever brought down for a showing in the Stadium. The Green and White steamroller was just too much for the Wolverines whose tenacious spirit of the first half was plowed under in :the second with an onslaught of four MSU touchdowns. On the State first eleven are at least four standouts who should be counted as candidates for All-American honors if they play the rest of the year the way they played against Michigan. One would be Big .Dan Currie. The giant 6' 3" 225 pound center was an inpenetrable barrier for the Wolverine backs all afternoon. Daugherty claims he's "the best linebacker I've ever seen," and the rest of the MSU team must agree as Currie was awarded the game ball for his afternoon's labor's. Walt Kowalczyk would be another worthy of national recognition if performance against Michigan were the standards necessary. The 'Sprinting Blaclsriith' hammered out 104 yards on 17 carries for ,an average of 6.3, and along with this scored his team's opening touch- down. Badger flash the Buckeyes' all-around superi- ority. Illinois had the ball three times' in the first half and lost it each time on a fumble, once after going 58 yards to the Ohio 19, again on its own 41 after a 22-yard advance, and the third after a 60-yard drive to Ohio's ,36. Illinois tied it in the first two min- utes of the third period when Hal- ler hit end Rich Kreitling witi a' 58-yard pass play which ended a 77-yard march in four plays. Colts Seek I Quarterback Jim Ninowski is another. His contribution? Merely connection on seven of,1l passes for. 117 yards and two touchdowns. This is all in only three quarters of play as Daugherty didn't feel his quarterback's' unerring arm was needed in the last stanza. And as a last candidate, the 'Golden Toe' himself Dave Kaiser. It isn't necessarily for kicking feats, either. In fact Kaiser's toe seemed to bothering him a bit in the first half as he missed his first' two attempts. His worthiness was instead in the pass-catching and knocking - down - Michigan ball- carriers departments. On the sec- ond play of the game he was on the money end of a 44 yard Nin- owski pass and he and the quar- terback proceeded to play catch for the rest of the afternoon.b For out and out sensation, how- ever, MSU's second string replace- ment for Kowalczyk, Art Johnson; stole the afternoon's spotlight. His race around end for 62 yards and. paydirt, seemingly outrunning Jim Pace in the effort, was the longest run of the day." .f*<.'. Late in the game, Daugherty gave the fans a look at the small- DAN CURRIE est man on his team, diminutive All-American? 5' 3" 143 pound speedster Hennie Young, a crowdpleasing fullback, and brother to the Illinois immortal, Buddy Young. The younger Young showed his speed, gaining 27 yards in two plays from scrim- image, catching a pass for 11 more, and scampering another 27 yards with an intercepted pass. Playing at safety he demonstrated how a. small man can play defense also, when he si-s1led into 200 pound Bob Ptacek with a resounding tackle. Win Today especially well in his rookie season with the Packers. ' The Cleveland Browns, peren- nial dominators of the Eastern half of the pro league, are running true to form, this season. This afternoon's action will find them r up against the hapless Philadel-, phia Eagles who have yet to chalk up their first win. Encouraged by a fine perform- ance by fullback John H e n r y Johnson in last Sunday's game, the Detroit Lions will be out for blood when they meet the Los Angeles Rams today in Briggs Stadium. The -Lions also have been getting a good deal of help from their two fine quarterbacks, Bobby Layne SXYLING ! The Forty - Niners' overtook; the Rams for a 23-20 victory last week and are seeking their second straight victory to- day. However, the Bears, not living up to p r e s e a s o n expectations, could catch fire in this game. New York and the youthful Washington Redskins both victor-, ious a week ago will fight it -out in Washington today as will the Chicago Cardinals and the Pitts- burgh Steelers. IThe Da y'sR Bet. for Michigan. . * - LTHOUGH OtJTRUSHED in the line and outgained in, the back- field the Wolverines had their heroes, Jim Pace played an out- standing ball game. On Michigan's only scoring play, incidentally the first and only time anyone has been in State's end zone, Pace prac- t.ically took tle ball down the field by himself. Of the 69 yards cov- ered, Pace accounted for 53 of them, and on -his scoring run, he cov- ered the ground practically unaided in the way of blocking. Stan Noskin also added another fine game to his record. Playing a good share of the time due to Jim Van Pelt's injury the Sophomore quarterback, although harrassed all afternoon by charging Spartans, threw well and engineered the Wolverines' only TD. - Injury,List.. THE INJURY LIST for Michigan is short, but rather dark at the moment. Although no X-rays have been taken yet, John Herrn- stein's reinjured ankle is not in the best of condition. He came off the field under his own power, but had to be carried to the locker room at halftime. He later appeared, dressed in street clothes and on crutches, in the second half. Van Pelt left the game in the first half with a leg injury, but a taping job rendered him usable in the second half. Also rather ob- vious by his absence was Brad Myers. He had been suffering from a cold most of last week, but the coaches thought he might be recov- ered by game-time. A fever Friday night, however, was Myers' ticket to Health Service. Summed up, it was a blue day for the Blue. Outrushed, outgaiied, and outmanned, Michigan can be glad of one thing. It's over, and the future should be, brighter.
