"While demand on the practi- tioner's, time :increases, 'propor- tionately fewer students are going into the basic sciences-pharma- cology, bacteriology, biological chemistry, and others-to provide the necessary teaching staffs for our medical schools," Dr.. Fursten- berg added. Not 'Enough : gResearch Not enough basic research is being done as a result, he con- tinued:' Although basic strides are being made at controlling a disease like cancer, the causes of the di- sease are not known. Dean Furstenberg suggested that the medicaldprofession take upon itself the financing of funds for sapital outlay, eucation, research equipment, and recruitment and1 training of research per onnel. "If each doctor in the United States gave $100 4 uyear tohis alma mater, medical education would have in the neighborhood of $18,000,000 a year. This would be, by 1954 earnings ($16,000 a year), only .63 of 1 per cent of his net income," the dean said. To obtain the public support, Dr. 'Furstenberg said, "We must take the public into our confidence. They, must be told the needs of medical eductalon, and that it Is up to' them to Help meet these needs. We are dealing with _ a threat to the future health of our nation." Some men can't read, it seems, and according to Marjorie Shook, '59, Frederick House president, there have been some humorous incidents. She explained that one evening Lila Beck, house resident director, was checking the women out. She heardstrange voices, male voices, and wondered. Miss Beck could see no men, but looked in the hall. There were three men students walking down the corridor. Evidently, Miss Shook explained, the men did,not realize the Frederick House was a women's dormitory. Stopped by Student Miss Shook was stopped in the South Quad lobby by a male stu- dent a few days ago. He explained that in. his former room on the second floor he had left some things. "Lift off the bottdm drawer," he directed, "and please get my hat and a lamp." The student obligingly supplied a screw driver for the operation. Miss Shook explained that there were "lots of problems to solve" in starting Frederick House. She is the only student in the house who has been at the University in pre- vious years; all other women in the house are newcomers. 30 Freshmen There are 30 freshmen and 41 transfer students living in Fred- erick House.; "So far the men in South Quad- rangle have been perfect hosts. Between the two groups, most of the problems have been solved," Miss Shook added. She said that Frederick House has been "very socially accepted. "The University needed more room for women's housing," he See the New Type, Tiny, Plastic, Invisible, Fluidless CONTACT LENSES said. Various plans were sug- gested, and Prof. Lionel H. Laing of, the political science depart- ment suggested the plan which would make Frederick House out of the lower part of Taylor House. Move to Markley As soon as the new Mary Mark- ley Hall is completed, women will move from Frederick House to the new house on the hill. Duane said that the original feeling about Frederick House was "apprehension." Men students who had already signed up for lower floors of Taylor House had to be moved out. Letters were sent out to the Taylor men, and they were as- signed to rooms on the upper floorA.
