Beginning its second season as a pilot project, the series was organ- ized by the University in order to bring both concert artists and musical 'education to the Upper Peninsula high school students. Last year more than 2,000 per- sons gathered to hear the concerts given by the faculty of the Univer- sity music school and 3,000 stu- dents attended pre-concert clinics in five Upper Peninsula cities to learn first hand from listening to the University musicians. Six communities were contacted to participate in the series and all accepted. One later dropped out because of lack of finances. Concerts this season are sched- uled for Crystal Falls, Newberry, Houghton-Hancock, Ironwood, and Sault Ste. Marie. The season's program includes' the Vocal-Instrumental Ensemble, the Stanley Quartet, the Brass En- semble, Vocal-Piano Duo with Richard Miller, leading tenor of Zurich Opera Co., the Woodwind Quintet, and 'Opera Scenes pre- sented by music school;students. By RICHARD RABBIDEAU V Having trouble concentrating? Your trouble. may lie in what the seismologist calls "micro- seisms" - a handy word, used by scientists to describe one of their headaches, noise. Seismology, which is concerned with the study of vibrations caused by earthquakes, bombs and blasts in general, is also concerned in a slightly different manner with noise. Records Vibrations The basic tool of seismography, the seismograph, records vibra- tions by means of a small beam of light which travels across a piece of photographic paper, tracing the amplitude and period of the pass- ing waves. The microseisms-street noises, noisy trains, atmospheric disturb- ances -create vibrations of their own, which can make highly ac- curate readings difficult. The University's seismograph "station," located in the basement of the Natural Science Building, has only one seismograph in op- eration at present, but another is being improved. "I was free to go where I wished and do what I wanted in Moscow," he said. Low Living Standard; Russian people have a standard of living three or four times lower than Americans, he pointed out. The Red's answer to this fact is in the form of a boast. Russian workingmen are informed that their standard of living will exceed the American's in the short period of a few years. "Of course, this is impossible. The Russians could not hope to even approach the American stan- dard with their present system of economic organization," Prof. Bal- sor would listen to what I had to say about the American way of life," he continued. The Russian press and radio present a very stereotyped view of the United ,States, he 'said. Domi- nation of the economy by monopo- listic corporations, rampant politi- cal corruption and racial tension form the main picture -Russians have of America. "I was constantly reminded of the racial injustices in the United States. The Russians also blamed America for obstructing the stop- page of the arms race," he com- mented. "The Soviet system has not changed .considerably during the past eleven years. The country is still controlled by the top dictator- ship of the Communist Party," Ballis stated. It was in this manner that seis- mologists were able to tell that the earth's core is not solid but fluid and that there may be an inner core as well. Vibration Waves When an earthquake occurs, waves of vibration begin to travel through the earth and on its sur- face. Surface waves from a very large earthquake may pass completely around the globe several times be- fore they die out to a p'int beyond detection. Because different types 'of vi- brations travel at different velo- cities, they are recorded by seis- mographs at different times and the duration of all recorded mo- tion may last several hours.
