THE MICHIGAN DAILY I, -___________________________________ -- _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ _ __ _ _ _ _ . ,4 By AL JONES Michigan's football .squad will leave for the West Coast at 10:30 a.m. today to write the first page in its 1957 .grid annals. A 38-man traveling squad has been selected for Saturday's en- counter with Southern California. The group will travel by a char- tered United Air Lines DC-7 direct from Willow Run to Burbank, Calif. Pelt, John Speidel and Jim Sytek threw well, but the best perform- lance came from Stan Noskin, who -hit. the ends and halfbacks with unerring accuracy. Defensive' Work Arrive Home Sunday They will stay the. first two nights in the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena, and Saturday night at the Hollywood Roosevelt in Holly- wood. The squad will arrive back at Willow Run at 6:20 'p.m. Suzi- day. Practice yesterday was again long, but not as grueling as the previous day's. Most of the time, was spent in ironing kinks out of plays, and reviewing formations for both offense and defense. Four quarterbacks all looked sharp on their passing. Jim Van The second half of practice found the varsity on defense with the "red shirts" running more Southern California plays. It was primarily centered on pass defense, and the 'first string backfield of Van Pelt, Jim Pace, Mike Shatusky and John Herrnstein looked .very ge d. Noskin and halfback Brad Myers also looked strong on defense. A good deal of time was spent near the end of drills for extra point conversion practice. Van Pelt is the principle returnee who did conversions last year. Offensive Practice The last half hour of the after- noon was spent in offensive drill, with the first four strings running through plays against practice dummies. The passing was again quite sharp. The team showed a lot of spirit,. and the final drills of practice was marked by many yells and much chatter., The squad will go through a final home practice at 8:45 a.m. today.
