WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1957 THE MICHIGAN .DAILY. WEDNESflAY, SEPTEMBER 2~5, 1957 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Michigan Drills Hard For USC Tilt Saturday By CARL RISEMAN Michigan's f o o t b a 11 squad 'sweated it out' on Ferry Field yes- terday afternoon. The team participated in one of its most grueling practices of the year as it prepared for the Saturday showdown with South- ern California. Leave Tomorrow A practice will be held this afternoon and a final session will probably be held tomorrow morn- ing just before the Wolverines de- part for the West Coast. A ttention! I-M Notice All I-M Athletic Managers from social fraternities, professional fraternities and i n d e p e n d e n t teams are asked to a tend meet- ings today at 7:30 p. in the I-M Building. Anyone interested in officiating touch football this fall should meet with George Hopper at the I-M Building tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. For better than three hours the team scrimmaged and went through the finer points of the game in preparation for Satur- day's contest. The 'red shirts' ran Southern California plays against the regu- lars, and the varsity was quite successful in stopping the reserves' attack. Michigan's varsity took to the offensive later in the day and was momentarily stalled by the spirited red shirt' defense, but led by the sensational running of right halfback Brad Myers soon began to gain ground against a game but tired reserve squad. Myers Impressive Myers, who has been running behind Mike Shatusky and Fred Julien up until yesterday, appar- ently has impressed the coaching staff greatly. It is quite probable that he will move ahead of Julien, and play second-string this week- end. Both Myers and Julien are sophomores, and great things are expected of them in the coming three years. Julien has been suf- fering from leg injuries this fall, and this may account partially for Myers promotion. One especially bright note of the afternoon was trainer Jim Hunt's report of no injuries. He stated that all the players would be able to play in Saturday's game barring unforeseen events. As the afternoon wore on the squad showed spirit and determi- nation. The players on the side- lines shouted enthusiasticly to their teammates on the field and much hustle was shown on the gridiron. Coach Oosterbaan climaxed the afternoon by having his players run windsprints for the final few minutes.
