THE MICHIGAN DAILY - Spring Coats Will Feature Chemise Look By NANCY VERMULLEN The chemise influence has ex- tended to spring coats. So relaxed are these new coat styles that only an occasional loose sash belt breaks the unfitted line. A bulky top, tapering sleekly to a narrow hem, is the favorite silhouette for the "loosened-up" coats. The oriental influence of wide Kimono sleeves accentuates the bulky-top look even more, as do the bloused and cowled backs. Necklines Take Over With this "topheavy" look so predominant, necklines gain a new importance., Draped, fringe tied or mandarin collars are being shown on many new coats. Long-waisted styles are favoring cardigan neck- lines or kerchief collars. The classic colors of black, gray,, navy and beige are still in force, but their popularity is being over- shadowed this season by the more off-beat hues of lavender, yellow, green and coral. The simple styles of this year allow a brilliance in color that their more extravagant predecessors couldn't "get away" with. Synthetic Fur Deceives Two popular newcomers to the coat scene are the short fur jacket and the costume coat. Replacing ' the suit jacket, the back-dipping short fur jacket is being shown in lightweight synthetic fabrics, in every shade from pastel beige to deep charcoal. The costume look, which boasts. a wool coat with silk print lining to match the dress beneath, is be- ing featured in the newest coat collections this spring. For either a Saturday night date or Sunday morning church, it offers the per- fect answer for coeds who want the coordinated look in their clothes. Saturday Phone NO 2-2341 (EDITOR'S NOTE: This is an inter- pretive feature based on interviews with rushees and active4.) $y ROSE PERLBERG Daily Activities Editor As sorority rushing moves into its second week, we thought we'd find out how this time-consuming phenomenon is affecting parties on both sides. To get one side of the procedure, we nabbed some rushees who had just gone through the mixers or first set. Aside from the fact that you could tell the rushees by their healthy - if frostbitten - pink cheeks, they told us, all the wo- Men had one thing in common: a big smile. This trademark, we learned was to last until March 2, when it would be replaced by a sick grin. Topics Didn't Vary What did they discuss? We found that topics were rather unique. There was the zero-degree weather, bandied about in a light' vein as soon as rushees could thaw out their lips; the where-do-you- live-on-c a m p u s, what-are-you - studying, and of course the who- do-you-know-that-I-know game, played with great relish and en- thusiasm. "You're from New York. Oh, do you know Jane Doe? I went to camp for six years with her. You don't? Really? Well, I know she's from Brooklyn. (Nervous giggle) or maybe it was the Bronx,. ." As the mixer chit-chat pro- gressed, they' said, the air of tenseness and. forced gaiety gave way to a more relaxed and pleas- ant atmosphere. All in all every- one seemed to be having fun and there were cries of "what, not al- ready!" when the time came to get up and leave. Rushees 'Hash' Actives When rushees trooped out of each house, echoes of . sorority songs lingering behind them, their inevitable "hash" session began. "I don't have to think twice about my name, where I live, or my major," we heard from the muffled depths of a thick woolen scarf. Her companion laughed, "You should have heard my room- mate last night. She was talking in her sleep. Kept repeating those things over and over again until it nearly drove me so crazy I had to wake her up." I We caught up with three rushees who were talking quite seriously about the houses they'd just vis- ited. "I really enjoyed that last house," one declared, "even though we just had a superficial conversation,. I feel I'm going to like it when we go back and can get to know some of the girls bet- ter." Negative Impression "Well," her friend commented dubiously, "I rather thought they were trying to make too much of an impression. You know, trying to sell themselves and the house. I felt a bit uncomfortable." They turned to the third for her opinion. "My feet hurt," she com- plained bitterly. 1 We stopped in at several houses to see what actives had to say. In the hustle-bustle of clean-up squads and song-practice organi- zation, we got some rather candid answers. Very few could honestly say that they really liked the whole process, although most were en- thusiastic about meeting so many new people. They agreed with some rushees we'd' talked to that rushing improved their social poise and conversational ability. "Know Your Sisters" Several pointed out that rush "really helps you, to get to know more about your own sorority sis- ters;" others that it "made the group more closely-knit." Of those who wanted to say anything at all, most condemned it as "tiring and detrimental to school work." The over-all label tacked rushing up as "a social period, much too drawn out, that is annually dreaded, but a neces- sary evil." But when we asked if they had any ideas for improving the sys- tem, we didn't get much more than a few tired yawns.
