The Illini netted eight hits off him in that time. Koch Ineffective Al Koch, who got only one man out against Purdue on Friday, wasn't much more effective when facing Illinois. He followed Rinc- key to the mound, hurled for one frame and was responsible for three runs. In the opening contest, the Maize and Blue spotted the visitors a five-run lead and ran out of time in trying to catch them. John Herrnstein went all the way for Michigan in absorbing his third Big Ten defeat against one win. Except for two bad innings, the big southpaw was nearly per- fect. Shaky Start He got off to a shaky start when he issued a walk, a double to Casey Barszcz and then a three - run homer to Kating in the first in- ning. And then in the sixth came two consecutive singles and a double by none other than Mr. Kating. These proved to be the winning runs. Michigan came back with one run in the seventh on three walks and a fielder's choice off winning pitcher Jim Flynn. In the eighth Bill Roman got his only hit of the day, a home run with Jack Mogk aboard, but that's as close ,to Illinois as Michi- gan could come all day long. CajAor League Stantdings AMERICAN LEAGUE Spartans Excel Whatever improvement Michi- gan showed yesterday was no match for the overall excellent play of the Spartans, who defeat- ed Michigan, 281/2-7%, and buried Detroit, 32-4. The Wolverines made the rout three-sided, down- ing U-p, 28-8. "Detroit didn't play well at all," observed Katzenmeyer. For ex- ample, the Titans' number one player, Bob Adams, carded a 93 on the first 18-hole round on his way to a 36-hole 172. Katzenmeyer was most encour- aged by the play of Pat Keefe and Larry Leach, Michigan's number five and six men. It was Roman's third. home run of the Big Ten season. Illinois won both games played yesterday, 5-3, 11-2. Tennis Meet Special to The Daily EVANSTON-Michigan's tennis match with Northwestern was can- celed because of rain, yesterday. All six singles matches had started, with only the number one singles being completed. In that duel, Jon Erickson de- feated Vandy Christie in straight sets, 8-6, 6-1. All other Michigan players were leading when the rain came, cancelling the meet. Tim Tam Takes First In Preakuess BALTIMORE () -- Tim Tam burst between the pace-setting Lincoln Road and Talent Show at the head of the Pimlico stretch yesterday and rolled home a bril- liant winner of the $133,950 Preakness Stakes. But Silky Sullivan, who flopped badly in the Kentucky Derby won by Tim Tam two weeks ago, again disappointed his thousands of ad- mirers and wound up eighth in a field of a dozer 3-year-olds con- testing Maryland's greatest horse race. The favored Purdue mile relay team won easily in 3:18.9 and the match was drawn 66-66. Individual winners for Michigan were Brendan O'Reilly in the high jump, Earl Deardorff in the half mile, Jerry Bushong in the discus, Joel Boyden in the shot put and Geert Keilstrup in the two mile run. Gibson Second In the pole vault Mamon Gib- son finished in a second place tie with Jim Johnson of Purdue at 14'. The Boilermakers' Bill Jones vaulted 14'41" to cop first. Michigan's ace broad jumper Lou Williams fouled four times and was thereby disqualified. John Twomey, the Wolverines' other broad jumper repeated Williams' performance, and as a result Michigan was shut out in this event. Deardorff led a Michigan sweep in the half mile. He ran a sizzling 1:51.8 to lead his teammates Bruce Fischer and Cam Gray to the wire. Keilstrup won the two mile run with ease in the comparatively slow time of 9:47.2. Boyden took thc shot with a heave of 47'10" to best his teammate, Ermin Crownly, whose best effort was 47'. Bushong threw the discus 137' 11" to win and O'Reilly placed third. O'Reilly's leap of 6'4" was good enough for first in the high jump. 11 Greeting Cards Gift Wrap Stationery Novelties .Duplicate Bridge Boards Bridge Supplies MORRILL'S Since 1908 314 State St. 1 I NO 8-9604 PIZZA NO 8-9604 -I 5577 Plymouth Road PIZZA Delivered Hot in our ELECTRICAL HOT FOOD BOX Closed May 18 for Alterations PIZZA FREE DELIVERY PIZZA i 11 Li WE S N I 2 AY'I k SHAGGY STAG!
