"Getting to know you, getting to know all about you." Starting with mixers right through final desserts, this is the theme of women's sorority rush- ing Complicated system is aided by the IBM machines of the business administration school. Rushing rules are first made known to wo- men in the summer when they re- ceive a brochure from Panhellen- ic Association. Booklet Distributed This booklet describes the acti- vities of the 21 sororities on cam- pus, gives a picture of each house and financial details and offers hints on rushing. Except for honor contact rules which permit free contact between affiliates and independents during the first semester, no actual plans are carried out until registration the first week in December. Then each woman is assigned a rushing counselor, her only contact with affiliates during actual rushing. Twenty-one mixers are the first stage of rushing for the women who attend a brief get-acquainted session at each house for 40 minutes. Mix at First Set At these parties the actives try to meet as many women as pos- sible and sing a traditional song or stwo. 1Following this set of parties the women pick up invitations for the second group. Rushees may return to eight houses. Panhel issues maps to the rushees and off they go. This set has a theme and the houses are decorated. Often the actives pre- sent a skit. Dress for these two groups is casual. Invitations Issued Again the rushees pick up their invitations for the next set. For this set woolen dresses and heels are worn. Women are shown through the houses, refreshments are served, and group singing is planned. As before, wom'en go, to the League to pick up their invita- tions for the picnic set. They may accept three of these. After sup- per, games and a short skit are, on the program. Bermudas, or slacks for this cold weather, with shirts and crew necks are the order of dress. Dressy Parties The last set of invitations is then picked up for the final des- serts with each rushee choosing two houses. These are the dressiest parties with party wools or taffetas as the outfit. After a traditional des- CAR SERVICE, ACCESSORIES FINE SERVICE- ALL IMPORTED CARS sert a short ceremony is usually presented by each house. Rushees then fill out sorority preference cards wait for Sunday afternoon to the League to receive bids. Pledging follows that; noon. their and to go their after- Strict Contact Rules Throughout rushing strict con- tact rules are in effect. All rushees use this period to visit any house they wish, to meet and talk with the- active members. Actually though, rushing begins long before the open houses. Early last semester, officers of the In- terfraternity Council began plan- ning for the spring rush. Dates Set Dates for the various events had to be cleared with the University and Student Government Council. Speakers for the mass rushing meeting had to be arranged and counselors from the fraternities had to be arranged. For the rushee, though, the first step in rushing is signing up with the IFC in a painless operation which involves nothing more than writing his name on a piece of paper. The rushee, in turn, receives a name tag in a little plastic case and a book describing the Univer- sity's fraternity system, rushing procedures and the individual houses on campus. Procedure Explained The next event on the rushee's calendar is the mass rushing CIRCLE - residence hall hon- org'ry will hold a meeting at 7:30 p.m. today at the League. * * * DANCE TRYOUTS - will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. today for the annual dance concert sponsored by the dance clubs of the Women's Athletic Association. At this meeting, rushing proce- dure is again explained and speakers explain various facets of fraternity life from their own point of view. After this. meeting, the only thing left is the rush itself. The IFC encourages the rushees to visit as many houses as they have time for during the open houses. Visit Many Houses This, they say, is the only way to find the house best suited to the rushee, During the open houses, the rushee and the fraternities look each other over. If the house wants, they ask him back again sometime later in the week for a smoker. If the rushee wishes he may either accept or reject this invitation.
