Explorer I's Launching No Surprise

Xi Sigma Pi
To Activate
New Chapter'
Upsilon Chapter of Xi Sigma Pi,
national forestry honor fraternity,
will receive its charter from Prof.
Reid Parker of the University* of
Georgia and National Secretary-
Fiscal Agent of Xi Sigma Pi, Sat-
urday at its initiation banquet.
Prof. Leland Stowe of the jour-
nalism department will be the
main' speaker at the banquet.
The nineteenth active chapter
of the 50-year-old honorary, Up-
silon chapter was organized by
nine faculty members and three
graduate students in the forestry
department who were members of
the honorary from other chapters,
Prof. Grant W. Sharpe of the
natural resources school said.
"The pledges," he said, "must
carve an ax of their own design
from a board of sugar pine to
prove their ability to work with
wood. They must carry it with
them for the week prior to initia'
tion and obtain the signatures of
all members on the ax as a mark
of the members' approval."
"They are also required to per-
form several hours of constructive
work before initiation," Prof.
Sharpe continued. "Some have
been pulling nails from campus
trees, nails accumulated from pos-
sibly a century of sign posting.
Another group has been cleaning
the grounds at the north entrance
to North Campus."
The officers of the new chapter
are Professors Sharpe, Forester;
Robert E. Dils, Associate Forester;
Evarett L. Ellis, Secretary-Fiscal
Agent and J. Alan Wagar, Grad.,
Ranger.

Married Student Survey Says

Combining college and marriage'
is not recommended by 40 per cent'
of the married students in college
today, a recent Seattle Pacific Col-
lege survey announced.
According to C .Melvin Foreman,
who initiated the survey, wives
marryingtafterhthe sophomore
year but before graduation take a
particularly dim view of the ven-
ture. He noted that in retrospect
the time between their former
single status and graduation now
seems very short, but at present
the graduation goal looks anat-
tainable.
Co-operation, Foreman indi-
cated, is most important. Couples
who financed marriage with just
one partner assuming major
financial support didn't recom-
mend marriage.
Those who had worked out what
they considered a co-operative

financial program were more suc-
cessful.
Having children while a student
does not significantly affect atti-
tudes. However, having an un-
planned child creates a negative
feeling toward being a married
undergraduate,
Students who began their first
serious dating in college were hesi-
tant to advocate marriage. Fore-
man noted many of these "had
been involved in abriefbut in-
tensive pattern of courtship."
The survey showed parents play
a part in the success or failure of
the campus marriage. Men who
were reluctant to recommend mar-
riage came' from homes where
there was strong parental opposi-
tion to marriage in the first place.
Parental opposition did not ap-
pear' to be a factor in the lives of
wives opposing college marriage.
