THE MICHIGAN DAILY Explorer I's Launching No Surprise Xi Sigma Pi To Activate New Chapter' Upsilon Chapter of Xi Sigma Pi, national forestry honor fraternity, will receive its charter from Prof. Reid Parker of the University* of Georgia and National Secretary- Fiscal Agent of Xi Sigma Pi, Sat- urday at its initiation banquet. Prof. Leland Stowe of the jour- nalism department will be the main' speaker at the banquet. The nineteenth active chapter of the 50-year-old honorary, Up- silon chapter was organized by nine faculty members and three graduate students in the forestry department who were members of the honorary from other chapters, Prof. Grant W. Sharpe of the natural resources school said. "The pledges," he said, "must carve an ax of their own design from a board of sugar pine to prove their ability to work with wood. They must carry it with them for the week prior to initia' tion and obtain the signatures of all members on the ax as a mark of the members' approval." "They are also required to per- form several hours of constructive work before initiation," Prof. Sharpe continued. "Some have been pulling nails from campus trees, nails accumulated from pos- sibly a century of sign posting. Another group has been cleaning the grounds at the north entrance to North Campus." The officers of the new chapter are Professors Sharpe, Forester; Robert E. Dils, Associate Forester; Evarett L. Ellis, Secretary-Fiscal Agent and J. Alan Wagar, Grad., Ranger.
