THE MICHIGAN DAILY )BEL PLANS TRAVEL, STUDY: Fuibright Scholar DisplaysDiverse Interests losophers in the United Kingdom," he says. He will study and travel in Eng- land and on the continent. Sobel's transportation, tuition, books and incidentals are paid under terms of the Fulbright grant. Choice Comes Late Sobel, 28 years old, did not choose philosophy as his field until. 1955. A native Chicagoan, he spent his undergraduate years, (1947-51) at the University of Illinois where he studied commerce and law. Upon graduation he entered the Air Force on an ROTC commission. Stationed at Scott Air Force Base, Ill., Sobel explained that he was listed as a utilities officer in charge of hall and washroom maintenance. Decided After Service "It wasn't until I got out of the service that I decided to go back to school," he said, "but at that time philosophy didn't interest me as much as law." "I wanted to get a law degree with work in the social sciences, so I could eventually teach in a law school." Returning to school, he acquired' a master's degree in philosophy, with the intention of taking up the teaching of courses in legal phi- losophy and jurisprudence. It was not until 1954 when he attended the University of Chicago for an- other year of law that Sobel's in- terest began to switch to philos- ophy. Lost Interest "I left the law after losing in. terest in legal problems." "In studying the law," he said, "your object is, at least in part, to master a large mass of detail as one would if he were studying butterflies." -~ -~ . - -- * "Fresh funny diversion Cheerful and II Ucharming.
