Jane Cowl was one of the first stars brought to Ann Arbor under the direction of Robert Henderson. Melville Cooper Elizabeth Risdon along with Edmund Gwenn and the entire New York cast of the comedy hit "Laburnum Grove" came for the ,gement. They closed on Broadway on a Saturday and opened here the following Monday. Walter Slezak was featured by the Festival ng the 1935 season, accompanied by a bevy of other well-known personalities. 58 Drama Season Continues Theater Tradition The biggest news on the local theater scene this' week is the opening of the 1958 University Drama Season, to run from May 12 through June 14. Tickets for the first play, "A View from the Bridge," will be available tomorrow at the Drama Season Business Office in the League. The production, Arthur Miller's most recent Broadway success, promises to be a powerful drama. The story of family relationships in unnatural conflict is set against the exciting background of New York City's explosive waterfront. Adler To Star Luther ' Adler, the star of "Bridge," is known to audiences for his stage role as the young boxer in "Golden Boy." He also co-starred in a Playhouse 90 tele- vision production with Paul Muni last month. Critic Walter Kerr called the play "A dramatic bonfire . . a must for anyone who is at all interested in what the contem- porary theatre is thinking about." The speech department is cur- rently working on a playhI!l of four one-act plays to be presented May 15 and 16. Open New Theatre The performances will open the department's new arena theatre- a remodeled part of the gymnas- ium in the Frieze Building. The plays, entirely student directed and produced, will feature mem- bers of the department in the casts. "The Last of the Lowries" will be directed by Katy O'Harra West- wood, '58Ed, "The Land of Heart's Desire" by Jim Young, Grad., "The Midnight Caller" by Norm Hart- weg, Grad., and "Dark Lady of the Sonnets" by Donald W. Mc- Lennan, '58. Detroit' is also having its share of drama this week. Wayne State University is presenting "Right You Are (If You Think You Are)" as their last major production of the year. The play, a satiric, tragic comedy by Italy's Luigi Pirandello, will be presented Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Social Work Debate Slted, Professors Clarice Freud and Henry J. Meyer of the social work school will take part in a student- faculty debate at 7:30 p.m. tomor- row in Rm. 4065 of the Frieze Bldg. The subject of the debate is, "Can Social Work Escape Middle- Class Values?" (A University student in the School of Music will tour Europe this summer as violinist with the Juillard orchestra, chosen by the; United States State Department to perform at the Brussels World's Fair. Michael Avsharian, Grad., will play in six concerts at Brussels and will also perform in England, Switzerland, Germany and Italy.
