He struck out six, including the entire side in the fifth, and walked three. Koch's big sweeping curve never worked better. Although in four innings out of the seven the lead Statistics First Game batter got on, he interspersed his strikeout bail well enough to keep out of trouble and to send seven Spartans back to the bench after stirring up nothing but a breeze. Both hurlers had shutouts ruined in the final inning. MSU captain Frank Palamara belted a homer off Herrnstein, while a hit batsman, base on balls and a single by Dick Golden led to the Spartans' only run in the finale. Michigan's hitting ran the gam- ut from hot to cold. They blast- ed three opposing moundsmen in the opener with 14 hits, including six for extra bases. But all th power was expended for the day as they managed only four safe- ties in the next game, all singles. Ernie Myers, Bill Roman and MacDonald each connected for circuit clouts. -aiy-sarl noc DOUBLE-WINNER-Michigan's freshman sprinter, Tom Robin- son breaks the tape ahead of Irving Petross of the Detroit Track Club and Glenn Burgett of Michigan State in the 100-yd. dash. The Wolverine linksmen were defeated by Purdue, 29-13, by Ohio State, 27-15, and by Indiana, 19-17, in the meet which was run as a succession of dual meets among the various teams. Purdue, led by medalist Jon Konsek's 73-74-147 total for 36 holes, dominated the match. In addition to their victory over Michigan, the Boilermakers topped Ohio State, 251-16%, and In- diana, 24/2-11%. Indiana finished second by edging OSU, 19-17. Each golfer competing in the meet played 36 holes, earning team points for his score after each nine holes and for his final score. Michigan Coach Bert Katzen- meyer used a lineup yesterday that was almost totally different from that which defeated Detroit last Wednesday, and was displeased with the results. Ray Lovell was low man for the Wolverines with a 79-79-158, a total bettered or equaled by at least half the golfers on the other teams. Dick Bither shot 81-80- 161 in his first competitive ap- pearance of the season. Captain Stan Kwasiborski totaled 79-84- 163; Pat Keefe had 84-81-165; Larry Markman shot 78-88-166; and Larry Leach also had 166 with 77-89.
