He'll have more time then, sinice he ;won't be coaching the kids any more-a fact easily accepted by manor ~but miighty difficult for R~ay Fisher to accept. Fisher came here under 'unusual circumstanes-as e. result of takig the Wolverine job, he was "blacklisted" by Commlissioner Landis from Organized Baseball for life. "I had permission to come here as a coach, but they wouldn't recognize 'it," he r "embers.'n dyI received a lifetime pass to anay park for long nd'imeritorious ser'vice to baseball,"' he grinned. "They apparently recognized that I hd been in the right on the matter." A Place To Stopv... DESPITEHIS AVIDNESS for the sport,, Fisher. couldn't have cared ls aboult Landis's warning. "I was having trouble 'and'' ,liked to coach and was looking for a place to stop. I was a guy who liked sports tremendously and still do" Per'haps it's just as well that Fisher' is stepping down. Of. college baseba~ll, he says,, "The, major leagues are killing it now" Just like they're ruinig the minors. In the old days, for example, it took a-half a day to get to Detroit, and now yrou can make it in half an hour. if you drive fast, People want to go to the top-they want to see the .big' guy. I think~ that's true of any sport in existence." Fisher has coached some fairly illustrious athletes., On the Tiger;, for exam~ple, Dick Wakefield, Don Lund, and most recently, Steve Boros saw ser'vice after leaving ilchigan. Pete Appleton, who hurled for severl major league clubs, was also a Fisher protege. And Fisher has beenigiven. considerable credit for the early development of the Pbililies' great Robin Roberts. 'A. Grand Kid. .. "IUAD HIM iIn summer baseball up in Vermont in a little league which, was finally disbanded. He's. a grand kid. I hear from Robbie every now and then." This was the. extent of Fisher's conversation on this~ subject; as in. most cases, he ;hesitated. to comment fully on an obviously admirable accomplishment. Fisher has seen too.mny Big. Ten baseball campaigns to Jump to any conclusions about the approaching one, which. opens today at East Lansing. "Right now I am very doubtful of my pitching,," he says. The rest of the team will be all right, They're hitting- pretty good. Maybe if we have a' little luck this, weekend,- we'll cause some 'trouble."' What will he do next year? "That's too far ahead to think about. I have no 'idea. I've got enough to' think about right now without worrying about that?' Ray Fisher paused.
