Archer Discusses Attraction Of Hindu Legend for India By JUDY DONER The story' of a god and, his' paramour captured the hearts of India mainly because Hindu so- ciety made the actual achieve- ment of love difficult, according to William G. Archer of the Vic- toria and Albert Museum, London, England. Archer, addressing listeners at the University lecture series on "The. Love of Krishna in Indian Painting," told of ~ the life of" Krishna, a beloved god of India, through poetry and slides. "The story of Krishna surprises us, because of the natural way the religion and romance in it are identified together," Archer re- tmiarked. He related the story of how the god Krishna fell in love withRad- ha, a milk-maid and a married woman. The two experienced an all-inclusive love, which pervaded every moment of their lives. Through the use of slides, Arch- er pointed out the pleasure they took in each other, whether he was helping her to do farm work, they were playing 'among the flowers, or as they met after an absence. Their capacity to enrich the passing . moment, Archer ex- plained, is why Radha was willing to give up her moral standards, and though married, to love Erishna. "However, there Is another as- pect to the story," Archer con- tinued. "Krishna was not faithful to Radha." "When she discovered that he had been making love to the oth- er milkmaids, she rejcted him. "Krishna realized that it was Radha whom he really loved, however, he was unable to give up the other milkmaids," Archer noted. In other stories he related, Krishna was known as a hero, and a prince.. Although born of royal blood, he 'was reared among shep- herds in order to protect his life from a tyrant king. When he came of age, he left his pastoral environment to slay the tyrant, according to Archer. He eventually set up his own kingdom, and returned only once more to the milkmaids, and then to tell them goodby. also Fred MacMurray, Dorothy Malone and James Barton in "QUANTEZ" I IF Robert Ashton, '59, president of IHC, recently announced that the following quadrangle officers had been elected.
