THEMICHIGANDAILY Department To Conduct City Survey A survey, conducted under the auspices of the City Planning De- partment, will begin today in the north central area of Ann Arbor planned for an urban renewal project. Forty-one trained volunteer in- terviewers will participate. Socio- economic information is expected from approximately 194 families who will be contacted on a random sampling basis. Questionnaires were formulated by Mrs. Angus Campbell, chair- man of the relocations subcom- mittee of the Citizens Committee on Urban Renewal, and by Mrs. Kenneth Magee in consultation with the Survey Research Center. The questionnaires ask for infor- mation on population character- istics, family expenses, income and attitudes concerning housing and urban renewal. Monday afternoon, letters from Ann Arbor's mayor, Prof. Samuel J. Eldersveld of the political sci- ence department, were sent out to the people who will be contacted. "Your participation is, of course, voluntary, but we sincerely hope you will wholeheartedly support and co-operate in this vitally im- portant survey," Eldersveld said. Interviewers Favorably Received University survey specialists re- port that for the most part Ameri- cans like being interviewed about1 attitudes toward economy, family relationships, and other subjects. Public response to the inter- viewers is almost invariably favor- able, the University has found, although the subject matter covers a wide range of topics. Indian Expert To Give Talk "Romance and Poetry in Indian Painting" will be discussed by William J. Archer, keeper of the Indian Section in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England, today at 4:15 p.m., Aud. A, Angell H 11. rcher will illustrate his talk with colored slides of miniature paintings from the foothills of the Himalaya Mountains, according to Prof. James M. Plummer of the Fine Arts Department. Sponsored by the Fine Arts De- partment as part of the University lecture series, Archer's talk will be open to the public. Daily Classifieds Bring Results Fewer than one person in 10 interviewed in the report declared they would not want to be inter- viewed another time, while nine in ten found the experience interest- ing and three-quarters felt they would enjoy being interviewed again. From time to time, the Univer- sity checks reactions to its field section of 200 interviewers over the country to assure continuance of the high standards of its'scien- tific survey research. "The Respondent Reports on the Interview," an article by Charles F. Cannell and Morris Axelrod of the Survey Research Center, pub- lished in the American Journal of Sociology, amplifies these findings.
