THE MICHIGAN DAILY Blau Talks On Groups, Individuals Prof. Peter Blau, of the Univer- sity of Chicago Sociology Depart- ment presented the topic "Bu- reaucracy; Social Structure of Sociological Processes," to an over- flow audience, yesterday. Blau explained the attributes of an individual and the attributes of the group and how the two are related. A long question period then ensued at which time he de- fined his terms. The study of government agen- cies employment interviewers' patterns of cooperation and com- petition was then discussed. Blau the author of the book "Dynam- ics of Bureaucracy," the study of employment interviewers present- ed information fromthis and sub- sequent research material pertain- ing to welfare agencies in Chicago to explain the interviewers pat- terns. Blau then explained the factors which cause difference in social patterns. "Some e m p l o y m e n t agencies workers keep any good employee records under their blot- ters away from fellow workers so that they may be promoted soon- er. This is the competitive system. Gift Honors Law Quad Donor Cook A bouquet of yellow roses ar- rived at the Lawyers Club yes- terday, commemorating the 100th birthday of its founder William W. Cook.. The gift was made by his niece, Mrs. Florentine Cook Heath, one of the few women, according to Prof. John Reed of the Law School, whom Cook even tolerated. Cook was born April 4, 1858 in Hillsdale, Mich. He received his bachelor's degree in 1880 and graduated fron the Law School in 1882. After amassing .a goodly amount of money practicing cor- porate law in the East, he decid- ed to contribute to the Law School at the University. Letters written at the time of undertaking show Cook's pride in the venture. The Lawyers Club was to be an -integral educational adjunct to the Law School, like the famous Inns of Court in Eng- land. Nothing was too good for it. An old newspaper clipping re- veals that Cook was a "man apart, a mysterious individual, secre- tive, incomprehensible." Because of his introverted personality, "turning from the imperfections of the actual to the creations of his own mind," the clipping sug- gests he refused to view his crea- tions "for fear, perhaps, that they would not realize the splendor of his dreams." s,.| I IA DAILY OFFICIAL.BULLETI ~\ * AS _ *~~SJ I neers, Mechanical Engineers, Metallur- gical Engineers, Aerodynamicists, Physi- cists and Thermodynamicists.
