"Last year, for instance, my first job in office was, being chairman of Lantern Night. There -was ab- solutely no interest in the annual line of march by houses to Lan- tern Night so we had to dispense, with it this year," the tall brunette) added. "This is also why we conducted a survey of the women's houses about possibly changing the name of the WAA. Holds Many Positions This year has been a very busy one for the active Miss Austin. Being president of the WAA, she has presided over its board meet- ings, been an ex-officio voting member of League Council, the representative to Campus Chest and chairman of the Steering Committee. Still, she has been able to keep up her scholastic average and is presently a member of Scroll. As a freshman, she was a Buro- cat, worked on Frosh Weekend and was in the University Choir. She started her work on WAA as Basketball Club's manager the fol- lowng year. Last year she was the Dorm Manager under the House Athletic Manager for the WAA. Since she has been president, the WAA has been investigating the possibility of financial aid from the University. Right now it is a self-supporting organiza- tion. "If we could get it, we could spend more time on activities other than making money," Miss Austin commented in a business- like tone.. Clubs Wish To Travel "For instance, the clubs can- not enter intercollegiate women's competition and be paid for trans- portation unless it is.within a 75- mile radius. This greatly limits our opportunities to get together with other colleges in the Big Ten," added the ex-president. To her successor, Miss Austin offers this advice, "Don't get dis- couraged in the depressing mo- ments because things will pick up. Being president is a self-satisfying experience. I didn't realize the scope of the office myself until I had been in office for some time," she said with authority. This is why the WAA is inaug- urating a training period for its new officers this year, Miss Austin added she "would like to see the new board include a big project like Lantern Night in the fall so the members could become closely iintegrated from the beginning." As for her future,'she plans to do graduate work 'in physical therapy at the University after she receives -her bachelor's degree in education in June. In the future she would like to work with the handicapped in schools, Frosh Weekend The Blue Team for Frosh Week- end will hold a floor show rehear- sal at 7 p.m. today in the League.
