Until a few years ago, the cloth
was used only locally, Mrs. Dun-
ham says. In 1952 the Indian gov-
.ernment invited the American
Friends Service Conimittee to help

, ,

with the community development
in that country. .
As part of their work in the
area southwest of . Calcutta, the
AFSC brought a master weaver,
from Denmark to help develop
the weaving industry.
With her help, the village weav-
ers, which now number about 50,
have deteloped fast, uniform col-
ors and designs and new forms
such as skirt lengths, bed spreads
and table mats 'to appeal to the
Western buyer, 'Mrs. Dunham
says.
The result of their work is
warm, attractive colors and very
'beautiful and distinctive Indian
designs, she remarks, adding that
favorite designs include fish, ele-
phants, or lotus plants.

Persons interested in buying
some of the material- may, order
directly ! from the Weavers Co-
operative in Barpali, Orissa, India,
Mrs. Dunham says.
The material is growing in pop-
ularity throughout the world, she
says. Displaying and promoting it
is done entirely on a nonprofit
basis through "interested persons
like myself," Mrs. Dunham ex-
plains.
