' _ _ ' I- "71 Gym Star 44 I I LOUISVILLE, Ky. (A) - Cin-V derella Seattle crushed titled fa- vorite Kansas State, 73-51, and three time champion Kentucky, winning ,61-60, on Vernon Hat- ton's field goal with 12 seconds left snapped ' Temple's 25 game w i n n i n g streak tonight . and reached the finals of the NCAA basketball tournament. Old hand Kentucky and the spectacular but solid Chieftains of Seattle will play for the cham- pionship at 10 p.m. Saturday fol- lowing a Temple-Kansas State game for third place. First Since 1950 Seattle which has All-American Elgin Baylor will be the first at- large team*'to reach the national finals since City College of New York accomplished the feat in 1950. Last night witnessed furious basketball . in the Kentucky- Temple game and an almost un- believable run-away for unsung Seattle over highly-touted Kansas State. Temple's All America Guy Rod- gers gave Kentucky its chance when he missed on a one-and-one free throw chance with 27 seconds left and the Owls from Philadel- phia, leading 60-59. - Ed Beck, whose rebounding was a tremendous factor in the vic- tory, tipped the rebound out to Adrian Smith and the Southeast- ern Conference perennials, hitting .for a record fourth NCAA cham- pionship, called time-out. Ken- tucky came out with a set-play' after huddling with Coach Adolph Rupp, and Johnny Cox fed 11at- ton beautifully as he drove to the basket. Hits Easily The fuzzy - haired Kentucky backcourt man cut easily past the Temple defense, under the basket, aid hit with a lay-up. It was old stuff for the Owls, who had lost to Kentucky last Dec. 7 in overtime. .That was the first of only three defeats suffered by the Middle Atlantic Conference team this season and Kentucky, thanks to Hatton, bagged two of them. 2 3 4 .80 .96 1 12 3 DAYS 2.00 2.40. 2.80 6RAYS 2.96 3.55 3040 WASHTENAW -- NO 8-7200 THURS. and FRI. The Nittany Lions will provide the final opposition for Newt Lo- ken's charges before they travel to Iowa City for the Big Ten Meet on March 28-29 Gagnier Returns Tonight will mark the first showing of the Wolverines' Cap- tain Ed Gagnier who has been out of action since he was injured on February 15. He is expected to compete in both the tumbling and free exercises, but reaccurance of a shoulder separation in Wednes- day's practice will limit his ap- pearance to tumbling. Michigan's Big Ten Trampoline champion Ed Cole will also return STATE AAU: Michigan's wrestlers, both var- sity and freshmen, will seek indi- vidual honors today in the Michi- gan AAU meet in Detroit. Since no team crown is up for grabs, many of the varsity grapplers will not compete. How- ever, a few of them will partici- pate, primarily in an effort to warm up for next weekend's NCAA Championships at Laramie, Wyo. Pearson Rated Tops The Wolverine most likely to return with title honors is Cap-. tain Max Pearson,Big Ten 130-lb. champion the last two seasons, honored as the '"Outstanding Wrestler" in the Conference meet two weeks ago. He ranks as a like- ly contender in the nationals. Many of the Wolverine fresh- men will have an eye on titles. Michigan Coach Cliff Keen and his assistant Charlie Anderson rate this year's yearlings as one of the most promising groups ever. Sophomores Outstanding "It's probable," Anderson states, "tha~t most of the varsity positions ntext year will be filled by sopho- mores. In those weights where veterans will be back, they will be pushed by these new boys.". The grapplers will be competing in a- rugge field today, made up of the best amateur wrestlers in the state. There will be entries from other colleges, athletic clubs, besides many free-lancers. Freshmen Given Chance Two freshmen with good chances for honors are Ambi Wil- banks and Dennis Fitzgerald. Wil- banks is a 123-lb. competitor from Ypsilanti who was Michigan high school champion last year, and has shown good improvement throughout the winter. Fitzgerald is from Ann' Arbor, and has been in the service since graduating from high school. lie will wrestle at either 167-lb. or 177-lb. I-- to the active list to perform to- night. He was out with a sprained ankle for the past three weeks and will perform heavily taped., The third returnee to Michi- gan's active list will be Wolfgang Dozauer who tore a ligament in his shoulder in last week's meet against Navy Pier. Dozauer Also Back As is the case with the first two, Dozauer will not be at top strerngth. His shoulder is still weak and heavily taped. Penn State has- another power- house this year and match Michi- gan in only losing one meet. Penn State's big guns are Lee Cunning- ham and Jay Werner, two out- standing all-around gymnasts. Tonight's meet will consist of six events. Trampoline and rope climb will be excluded from offi- cial scoring although both teams will participate in each event. Only Used in West The trampoline is used primar- ily. at schools in the Western part of the United States, while the rope climb finds itself at honme in the Eastern dual meets. The rope climb event will give Michigan's Dana Larson. his first competition but hewill really have to shine to win. His compe- tition will be Penn State's Phil Mullen, the Eastern Intercollegi- ate champion. Larson's talent will again be put to use next week in the Big Ten Meet which holds the event even though it has withdrawn the rope climb from its dual meets. Tonight's meet will feature an- other exhibition by Carolyn Os- borne, Michigan's feminine gym- nast. She will perform a free cal- isthenic routine. Her most recent gymnastics award came in the Sarasota Win- ter Meet where she received the Bonnie Prudden award as the meet's most promising feminine gymnast. Arnold Heft, an NBA referee and member of the group, said backers are set to put up $15,000 in the nature of a bond, have al- most all the $75,000 needed for a second payment and promises for the balance. The $225,000 represents the price tag Cincinnati owners placed on the franchise when they asked NBA President Maurice Podoloff to try to sell it.
