Sigma. Chi turned on the pres-
sure in the fourth quarter and
drew away to 40-28 victory over
Phi Delta Theta to win the I-M
Social fraternity 'A" championship
last night. h
A Phi Delt victory would have
given them a sweep as their 'B'
team whipped Sigma Alfha Ep-
silon 39-34 earlier in the evening.
Sigma Chi started slowly and
trailed till the end of the first half'
when- they went ahead for good,
but it was their sensational spurt.
in the fourth quarter that iced the
victory.
coley Wins
ater Polo
By CHUCK KOZOLL
Scoring quickly at the begin-
ning of the second period, Cooley
blanked Anderson 1-0 to win the
residence hall water polo cham-
pionship last night in the I-M
pool.
With one minute gone in the
second framne, the Trojan's John
Conover stole the ball from An-
derson's Ivan Mayamoto ',and
passed it to Al, Bolton in Anderson
territory. Moving into the Andy's
scoring zone, Conover snatched
Bolton's pr ec is i on pass and
smashed it into the, goal for the
lone Cooley score.
Anderson threatened Cooley
late in the first' period with a
drive by Frank Himmler, Glen,
McGruther and Mayamoto which
surged close to the Trojan goal.
Cooperative action by the solid
defense wall of Bob Bolton; Tom
Utaman, and Kim Greene halted'
the attempt.
Playing control ball for the re-'
mainder of the game, Cooley
spread out its team for a four
minute stall. Losing the fall with
about four minutes of the second
frame gone, the Trojan swimmers
consolidated defensemen to drown\
out their East Quad rival.
NIIL SCORE

At the end of the third quarter
the score was 29-26 in Sigma Chi's
favor. The teams traded baskets
and free throws and the margin
was 31-28. From that point on the
Phi Delts were blanked as Sigma
Chi scored nine consecutive points
in the last five minutes to cap the
victory.
Morrow Leads Sigma Chi,
Sigma Chi was led by Gordy
Morrow, who neutralized Phi Delts
height advantage by grabbing 16
rebounds as well as .scoring 13
points which was high for the eve-
ning.
The Phi Delts height advantage.
supplied by Bob Dunlap, John
Wiley and Pete Patterson carried
them through the first half, but
when Patterson fouled out early in
the third period the Phi Delts fell
apart.
Sigma Chi was superior in the
backcourt, and this proved to be
the decisive factor in the end. Sig-
ma Chi guards Bob McCollum and
Guy Briggs tallied 19 points be-
tweer them while the Phi Delts
guards scored put two points be-
tween them.
Phi Delts Win1B' Game
In the 'B', Phi Delta Theta took
the lead at the beginning of the
contest and lead all the way -,de-
spite constant pressure by Sigma
Alpha Epsilon to win the cham-
pionship 39-33.
In this contest the Phi Delts'
height advantage prevailed
throughout. Footballer Dave Bow-
ers controled the boards. Bowers
also was thegame's high scorer
with 13 points.
Thie contest was close through-
out and the Phi Delts never had
more than a three point lead until
the final minute of play. The Phi
Delts' led 11-10 at the quarter, 19-
17 at half and 31-29 at the end
of the third quarter.
With this victory, the Phi Delts
successfully . defended their 'B'
championship.
By TOM WITECKI
Van Tyne won the Residence
Hall "A" basketball championship
last night, by edging Cooley 51-48,
in a hard fought overtime contest.
The game which was witnessed
by some 200 cheering spectators,
was one of the most exciting games
in I-M history. Reid' Bushong of
Van Tyne sank a field goal with
15 seconds remaining to knot the
score at 48-48, and send the game
into sudden-death overtime.
For the first minute of the over-
time the two teams battled fur-
iously without a score. Van Tyne
then sank a free throw to pull one
point ahead, but this *as not
enough for victory as 14M rules
specify that the first team to score
two points wins the game.
Pandemonium Reigns
For the next two minutes pan-
demonian reigned in the I-M gym,
as both teams missed shots, threw
away passes and made various
mistakes, in their frenzied efforts
to score a basket.
As the game entered into the
fourth minute of overtime, Bu-
shong again came through in the
clutch for Van Tyne. From just
outside the foul lane, he let loose
with a soft jump shot that swished
through the twines giving Van
Tyne the game and the champion-
ship.
Bushong was the game's top
scorer with 27 points. Cooley was
paced by 'Ken Gnewuch with 17
points and Kim Greene, who play-
ed a great game under the boards,
scored 15 points.
The first four quarters of play
"'4..:.__...
were marked by great shooting and
superb ball handling by bath
teams. In the first half, play was
especially spectacular, as both
teams blazed away hitting for 29.
points apiece.

Confidentially, we don't think our snappy friend here is bright enough
to win our highly intellectual "We-can't-all-be-perfect-but-we're
making-every-effort" Contest. But we- bet you are! Just get an entry blank with your
next cleaning or laundry order and tell us some way in which we could
improve our service to students (please be brief, we're sensitive). Contest ends March 31 so
hurry in. See the Cushman Eagle Motor Scooter in our window.
