THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1, 1957 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE SEVEN THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7,1957 THE MICHiGAN DAILY PAGE SEVE?.I Hopes Rise for Cage, Hocey Squads Wolverines Among Best In Big Ten By JIM BAAD During its three week lay-off for exams and semester change, Michigan's position in the Big Ten basketball 'race has, if, anything,I brightened. Over the period, the following happened: Ohio State, who had led the Conference with an unde- feated string of six games, was toppled by Michigan State. The Spartans had just a few days be-' foreN upset a powerful Minnesota five.! Meanwhile, while Michigan was losing to Minnesota, Purdue up- set Illinois. Then the Wolverines waltzed over Purdue, while down in Champaign, Illinois was hand- ing Ohio State its second loss. F Tied for Third When one blows the smoke away and checks the standings, the Big 'en race is hotter than ever, with five teams, Ohio State, Purdue, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana, each possessing only two losses. By virtue of games played, Mich- igan is in a three way tie for third. , In such an upset-riddled Con- ference situation .the question is: "What are Michigan's chances in this melee?" Here are so'me additional facts. Up to this time Illinois has been coasting more cr less on the. tal- ents of its luge center, George Icers Add Four Players, Lose McIntosh, Gain Two Exhibition Wins over Montreal HOME OF DELICIOUS TREATS I - Barbeque Foods # Steak " Southern Fried Chicike -COMPLETE TAKE OUT SERVICE- . 1 - THE VIRGINIAN i - By BRUCE BENNETT Michigan's hockey team, still fighting an uphill battle to a higher perch in the Western Inter- collegiate Hockey League stand- ings, receives a shot in the arm tomorrow withi the addition of two fine sophomore forwards, Gary Starr and John Rendall, as it opens a two game series at Min- nesota. The addition of this pair, coupled with the return to action of Wally Maxwell and Mike Bu- chanan, helps soften a bit the blow of the' loss of Don McIntosh. McIntosh, the leading scorer on the team to date with eight goals and five assists, has been ruled scholastically ineligible for the second semester. Triumph Over Montreal The Wolverines warmed up for their upcoming league play with1 a pair of wins over the University of Montreal last weekend, 5-3 and 6-0. In these games, McIntosh skated with Maxwell and Tom Rendall, forming what Heyliger had hoped would be a top notch scoring combination for the stretch drive. Starr has been skating in McIn- tosh's place on this line in prac- tice this week and it'is likely that he will play there in the Minne- sota series this weekend. John Rendall has been combined with Jerry Karpinka and Joh Hutton, Hanrla for duty on defense and Don Gourley becomes the number one reserve forward. Hanna's re- turn to the blue line gives Heyli- ger a five man defense corps. Posts First Shutout Ross Childs, taking over the netminding duties from the grad- uated Lorne Howes, registered his first shutout in college play in Saturday's game, being called up- on to make only 17 saves. Heyliger expressed regret the Montreal didn't give his team a sterner test in ,"eparation for this weekend's games, but the Carribins were handicapped by several injuries which dimmed their chances. But the Boilermakers, who were conquerors of strong Illinois the previous Saturday, couldn't get by the Wolverines. The game was far from well-played by either team however, and Purdue seemed to be suffering from either a ter- rific letdown or a case of overcon- fidence. Michigan was guilty of its share of blunders, but with about five minutes to go, the Wolverines de- cided to play basketball and ran Purdue off the court. The final score was 66-54. OPEN MONDAY THRU FRIDAY 'TIL 9-SATURDAY'TIL 5 Bonsalle. Bonsalle is now inelig- ible due to a scholastic difficulty. Michigan lost no one during the semester break. Green Bolsters Spartans On the other hand, Michigan State seems to have made a valu- able acquisition in sophomore John Green. Michigan saw the first of Green in its one point vic- tory thriller staged at East Lans- ing, but the 6'6" center had the first-game Sitters. Sirice then he's made a big difference. The Spartans have bounced back from three straight Conference losses with three straight wins. The schedule ahead of the Wol- verines is a tough one, but the Purdue win lends hope. The home contest with Minnesota Saturday could tell a lot. The Gophers, who beat Michigan badly on their home court were "mighty tough" according to Coach Bill Perigo. Still, playing at Yost Fieldhouse seems to do something ,for this year's team. The local fans have yet to see Michigan lose on its home court. At the Crossroads From the historical standpoint, Michigan is just about where they usually have been at this stage of the season. It's right about here that the Wolverines' historically begin to fall hard. On the other hand, the Confer- ence is usually much more defin- itely stratified than it is at pres- ent. So far, no team has gained any kind of dominant position. Here's something to play with. On paper Michigan should be able to defeat any opponent in the Big Ten. The Wolverines have defeated Purdue, Michigan State, North- western, and Wisconsin. Purdue has beaten Illinois, and Illinois has defeated Ohio State. Michigan State has defeated Minnesota, Ohio State has defeated Indiana, and Indiana defeated Iowa. And there it is, Michigan's dominance, .- in the Big Ten. MOBaLLh S 314 South State Street . J h.
