PAGE TWO THE MCHIGAN DAUX TH + eaaaraa CEA1 rflS'aiL FRI1DAY, FEB5RUARY 15, 1957 r 'I NOT PAYING PROPOSITION: AA Community Lacks Sufficient Interest in DAC r I By ALLAN STILLWAGON David Metcalf is an artist, per- haps too much an artist for Ann Arbor. The veteran Dramatic Arts Cen- ter actor has acquired strict stan- dards during his theatrical career - standards which are hard to meet in a community with the percentage of "experimental the, ater" supporters boasted here. There is no suggestion of sharp criticism in Metcalf's appraisal of the local theater scene. "For towns of comparable size that I've seen, the situtaion here is good," he says. "The local group (Ann Arbor1 Civic Theater) is well supported,! and the Spring season at Lydia Mendelssohn draws large crowds. Not Enough Interest "But, the other half of the Metcalf-Audrey Wardteam re- reports there isn't enough interest to make the DAC a paying propo- sition. "I'm just a hired hand," he qualified, "but I don't think there will be a theater for classical and experimental theater in Ann Arbor next year unless a great many more people from the University and the community really want Metcalf defines "a great many more" as simply "more than the approximately 2000 who have seen each of this year's productions." DAVID METCALF-The DAC director-leading organization "a rare and unusual thing . . . for it is a tremendous privilege for work here." man terms the a serious artist, What is the problem, or can It be pinned down? Viewpoint from the Stage There is a new pattern in the United States .. ..over the years I've watched it being drawn from my viewpoint on the stage. "People no longer want to go to the theater unless there's a big name playing. Only colossal, the stupendous, the super-hilarious are what draws big houses," he observed. ELIGIBLE TO JOIN ? "Although there is unparalleled material wealth, there is also inner anxiety," he said. "The change that I've seen, starting in the twenties is worth illustrating." Seams Bursting In the twenties, America was bursting its intellectual seams, Metcalf explained. "Although a lot was mad and gay and worth- less, there were still exciting per- suits in every direction. "And in the thirties, at the depth of the depression, inquiry was still alive, it had just been more controlled, channeled. "But in 1957," he declared, "we are as tight as drums. There is little questioning, less searching." Audiences want to hear that 'God's in his heaven, all's right with the world'." Why? "Perhaps because they're afraid that everything isn't all right, but thgy feel better hearing that it is." As a result, the producers and directors whose aim it is to pro- voke and explore are "always tremendously in danger." The DAC, for examgple, "continues only because a few wealthy people are interested, and make up the finan- cial deficit each year. If they got tired ... well." It doesn't seem likely that the DAC "angels" will tire, however. Certainly not before the next pro- duction leaves the Masonic Temple arena. March 1, Euripides' "Mediea" will open as the last presentation of the 1957 season. 'Great and Thrilling' Metcalf beams in anticipation and assures that "this will be our finest piece of work . . in the years that I have been here. It is great and thrilling theater." The adjective thrilling is equally applicable to his feeling for his art. He calls it "vague and termed in a cliche." But sincerity and attendant depth is easy to recog- nize when David Metcalf speaks of "serving and propelling what is good and true and beautiful ... of being more able to create that sheer entertainment which has intrinsic beauty." VU'Students I Visit Toronto For Seminar Fifteen seniors and graduates of the business administration school will visit the University of Toronto on an exchange weekend begin- ning today, according to Edward Wehner, '57BAd. The seminar, sponsored by the Business Administration Council and senior class officers, will dis- cuss current international business problems. Members of the University of Toronto Commerce Club, Toronto professors, and businessmen will participate in forums on "The Corporate Revolution," and "Amer- ican Investment in Capital." Grant Given To Robertson James H. Robertson, assistant dean of the literary college, has been awarded a Carnegie Corpora- tion Travel Grant to visit eastern and mid-western colleges and uni- versities during March and April. The aim of the visit is to en- large perspective in administrative education problems. Three areas of concern to Dean Robertson will be 1) Examining whether smaller colleges are better able to help students adapt; 2) Handling the superior student in special programs; 3) Discussing aims, advantages and methods of academic counseling.
