IE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY MAY 17,1957 By EVELYN GOTTLIEB DAILY CLASSIFIFDN ADS winds in the upper regions of theI Teams of astronomers, engi- atmosphere. .... ,,.rs.... .. ..a.... ., .. neers, geologists, physicists and meteorologists will disturb the earth's usual activities as they in- spect and explore during the In- ternational Geophysical Year. I ,,....,..j.,.«....... IGY has panels in 60 nations on oceanology, glaciology, cosmic rays, rocketry and earth satellites. Its main purpose is to collect data, for specific times, on the earth's formation and atmosphere. SFrom the University's Engineer- ing Research Institute, teams of. aeronautical and electrical engin- eers headed by Leslie J6nes, re- search engineer, and Nelson Spen- cer, of the electrical engineering department will go to Fort Chur- chill, Canada, the main IGY rock- et research base, to fire 28 rockets. Gather Space Data Sponsored by the Signal Corps and the Air Force's Cambridge Re- search Center, these teams will build and install instruments to gather data from the edge of space, work on the aerodynamic features of rockets, fire rockets, and evaluate the information ob- tained. Active in this field for 11 years, these teams have developed precisel methods for measuring air pres- sure, temperature, density and The rockets will be actually fired because ground methods are indirect, phenomena measured may be different in another at- mosphere and cosmic rays are af- fected by the earth's atmosphere. Sixteen of the rockets will be Nike-Cajuns, 'combinat i o n s o f slender nine-foot-long Cajun rock- ets and propulsion units from Nike anti-aircraft missiles. ThevNike- Cajun has a range of over 100 miles and will contain instruments to measure upper air density and temperature. Aerobees Measure Temperature Other rockets will be Aerobees, bigger, heavier vehicles that can climb from 60 to 150 miles. The Aerobees will contain instruments to measure temperature and wind conditions. On the other side of the world, Antartica, three University geolo- gists will study the great fields of ice which cover most of that re- gion. Antartic Model Earth The group's leader, Prof. James H. Zumberge, of the geology de- partment explained, "Antartic ice may be a model of the earth's crust." From their studies geolo- gists may discover how the Alps, Himalayas, Rockies and other mountain ranges are formed. They will make geological sur- veys of the ice formations, drilling 100 feet down to take samples of ice at various levels. Some of the ice crystal found may be as large as a tennis ball. Add Solar Flare Telescope Geologists believe terrific forces must have been exerted to create such huge crystals. By charting the orientation of the ice crystals they can determine the stress patterns present. During the Geophysical Year, the University's McMath-Hulbert Observatory, near Pontiac, will add two astronomers and a solar flare patrol telescope. The patrol telescope will be one of 30 to 40 set up around the world to follow the sun 24 hours a day and record solar flares, the moun- tains of fire that are believed to have an important effect on the earth's radio communications. Geiger Counters Set Underground The University's new 28-foot- wide radiotelescope at Peach Mountain, will be in full operation during IGY, receiving outbursts of radio waves emitted at the time of solar flares and sunspots. Prof. Fred T. Haddock, of the astrono- my department will be in charge of this operation. Prof. Wayne Hazen of the phy- sics departmnt will set up rows of Geiger Counters, 50 feet under- ground, to detect the arrival of more energetic cosmic rays con- stantly showering the earth., . Scientists are convinced of clear connections between cosmic rays, solar activity and the earth's mag- netic field and magnetic storms. Drum Major Positions Open, 1116 S.
