TH-E MICHIGAN DAILY r S TNAV AY.Y 2195I7 i. (:7 V L/t1J 1rlAi l.rf 1JJ1 d FOREIGN STUDENTS: Union, League Plan Welcome Program DAILYCLASSIFIEDADS A new program to better ac- quaint incoming foreign students to University life is being planned by the International Committees of the Union and the League. The "International Friendship Program," under the chairmanship of Nancy Colwell, '58, and Richard Schwartz, '59, hopes to expand the whole foreign orientation program, according to Miss Colwell. The need for strengthening the bond between visiting and Univer- sity students is a great one, Miss Colwell went on, sinc'e "about 1500 men and women, or about 8 per cent of the University population is made up of foreign students." At present, the Union and League committees are securing names of foreign students who will be entering the University next fall. American students chosen to participate will receive the name of a student and will write to him or her over the summer. Meetings to be Held Upon arrival to campus and throughout the year, the visiting student will be assisted by his or her American friend. Plans will be made to help the student know the Uniyersity, find housing and becomesacquainted with American students. Regular meetings will be sched- uled during the year to complete the picture. Miss Colwell pointed out that often foreign students do not gain a full picture of Amer- ican life and culture. "This, of course, hampers their education here and does not pro- vide the opportunities to which they are entitled. We want to help them expand this outlook, and feel there is someone here who is personally interested in them," she said. May Still Petition Petitions enclosed in a letter ex- plaining the program were re- cently sent out to men on campus who might be interested in becom- ing American friends. Petitioning for women interested in the pro- gram is open until Monday. Miss Colwell remarked that women's petitions can still be ob- tained in the League undergrad- uate offices which are left open during the weekend. "We willneed about 60 women for the program," she added. It is hoped by both the chair- men, that mature men and women, both undergraduate and graduate, will petition to become American friends. Miss Colwell pointed out that this was an opportunity for those "truly interested in an en- lightening experience, fostering good will, friendship and interna- tional understanding."
