4 HONORS SUPPLEMENT t rl i l VV bwmmmmwNmmmh A6F lddhkm HONORS SUPPLEMENT ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, FRIDAM, MAY 10, 1957 Convocation To Hon dergwniversiegra duates; Princeton President-E etc il1 eal Here Today ,J Congratulations Each year the day of the Honors Convocation is justly dedicated to students who have achieved a supe- rior academic rating. In Hill Auditorium this morning hundreds will re- ceive formal congratulations from their University for as many jobs well done. Some will add the honor to a growing collection of accolades, others will cherish it as a precious, brief recognition for years of quiet work. Thousands more just recognize the ceremony as a symbol of tribute to their own efforts, for where one is honored, ten more go unnoticed - reading, typing, searching. Today, for the fifth consecutive year, The Daily presents its Honors Supplement as a tribute to both scholarship and accomplishment in extratcurricular ac- tivities. While it can never be complete, every effort has been made to list those who have distinguished them- selves academically or who have served their University through campus organizations. Where space was limited, and complete membership lists could not be included, the officers of the organiza- tion appear, instead. Also mentioned are all those who will receive recog- nition at the Convocation, as are the members of campus scholastic and honorary societies. To these people, and to the ones who serve without public recognitiorn, we extend our congratulations. Outstanding Students Win 'U' Awards Scholastic Ability Determines Choices Tangible as well as intangible rewards often come to students who have distinguished themselves academically. Alumni and friends of the Uni- veresity, wishing to recognize the values of scholarship annually add to the list of scholarships and prizes available to deserving stu- dents. Robert F. Goheen, president-elect of Princeton Univer- sity, will explore "The Not So Serene Temples of Learning." Goheen, 37 years old, one of the youngest presidents in the history of Princeton, was chosen to speak by the Honors Convocation committee and Assistant to the President Eric A. Walter. First of the annual academic convocations was held in 1924 by President Marion LeRoy Burton. The President felt then that "in the small world of a college campus far more oT1 public commendation and oe recognition of their achieve- ments come to the athlete or To Appear the office holder than to the ones who have distinguished themselves academically." Led by President William Ad- ams, '57 Grad., Vice-President Joe Collins, '58 and Lewis Engman, '57, treasurer, the Council studied many areas during the past year. One issue-Sigma Kappa-dom- inated, the work of the Council. Calendars; Rushing, Rent Initiation of SGC Forums, plus action on the Lecture Committee, the calendar, fraternity rushing, rising residence hall costs and a review of Panhellenic's proposed rushing calendar are the major ones. Half the Sigma Kappa problem was settled Dec. 5 when SGC found the sorority in violation of University regulations; the oth- er half will be settled in Sept. 1958 when the Council will decide whe- ther the sorority will retain rec- ognition. A committee established on Oct. 3 to study the University Lecture Committee and Regent By-Laws on outside speakers submitted a report accepted by SGC March 6. It contained 12 recommenda- tions calling 'for revisions in the Lecture Committee. Calendar Committee On Jan. 16, SGC called "for an immediate evaluation of the Uni- versity calendar" and recom- mended a study committee which was then established in Febru- ary by President Hatcher. Compo- sition of the Committee closely followed SGC's recommendations. Discussion forums were also es- tablished during the year. The first was on Sigma Kappa, the second on financial aid to Big Ten athletics and the third on the University calendar. Honor, Enrollment Establishment of a committee to study an honor system at the University on April 3 and the es- tablishment of a committee on in- creasing enrollments at the April 17th meeting are the most recent developments in a busy year.
