1 PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, MAY7,1957 1 LACKS ALERTNESS: Stokes Hits Press' Business Coverage SDAILY CLASSIFIED ADS By DIANE LaBAKAS The press's coverage of the in- fluence of big business and govern- ment in Washington was criticized yesterday by Washington column- ist Thomas L. Stokes. The press has not been alert in covering the vast, complex and important field of regulatory agen- cies, Stokes asserted. He said the press was respon- sible for reporting to the public who is respwnsible for w1aC onL the agencies and to explain the technical language that "serves as a camoflauge." Serves Business Interests "The Eisenhower Administration has been able through appoint- nent to change the policy and viewpoint of these agencies to serve the interests of those busi- nesses that are supposed to be regulated," Stokes declared. He added that the press has given little attention to the tax privileges presently enjoyed by big business. Commenting on the influence of big government, Stokes pointed to government secrecy as one prob- lem the press faces in covering Washington news. "The Cabinet has gotten out of from the public, Stokes remarked. He criticized the press for fol- lowing the Eisenhower Adminis- tration with "blindness" and giv- ing it little criticism compared to the "continuous drumfire on Dem- ocratic Presidents Roosevelt and Truman." "The press should be critical of any government. It is a shame to see such an attitude disap- pearing," Stokes remarked. Center ,Studies1 Youngsters The image children have of their parents may offer important clues to how youngsters get along with their classmates, according to results of a study by the Re- search Center for Group Dynam- ics. Ronald Lippitt, professor of psychology and sociology, Sidney Rosen and Lois Hoffman of the Research Center reported these results at a meeting of the Mid- west Psychological Associaticn Saturday. The Center is part of the Institute of Social Research. THOMAS STOKES . .. Washington columnist the habit of holding news confer- ences and reporters have not de- manded them." Stokes asserted. Withholding Information He noted that the tendency of the top officials to see less of the press and to withhold public in-! formation has trickled down to' lesser levels of government. A bill recently presented by Senator Thomas Hennings, Jr., (D-Mo.) would prohibit any gov- ernment official from withholding' such information and records i FOR RENT $65 UTILITIES FURNISHED Just redecorated, furnished studio apartment, suitable for graduate male student or couple.
