The sweep coupled with sec- ond game losses by Minnesota to Illinois and Iowa to Purdue gave the Wolverines undisputed pos- session of first place in the Big Ten. The Wolverine pitching staff added fine relief work by Glenn Girardin and Jim Clark to secure the victory. John Herrnstein started the first game for Michigan master- fully, allowing three hits in the first six innings. In the seventh he tired, giving up two hits and was charged with three rims, including a home, rua to the Wildcat's right fielder, Dale Pienta. Girardin relieved him in the seventh allowing one more hit. He retired the side in the' last two innings to give the Wolverines the win. Michigan went ahead 4-0 in the second inning. Steve Boros lead off with a single. Hill bobbled the ball and then fired past the first baseman for two er- rors allowing Boros to go to third and Vukovich to second. Hill, undoubtedly shaken, threw two wide pitches to Al Sigman and then intentionaliy passed him loading the bases. Jim Dickey pro- ceeded to work Hill for a walk scoring Boros. Hill then hit Herrnstein on the arm scoring Vukovich and Ernie Myers fol- lowed with a single scoring Sig- man and Dickey. The Wolverines increased their lead to 6-0 in the fifth when Bruce Fox got to first on an er- ror by the Wildcat shortstop, stole second, and scored on Tippery's double. He came home on Hutch- ings single. After Northwestern scored their only three runs in the top of the seventh, Michigan came back in their half to score three on Tip- pery's first home run. Myers had walked and Fox had singled to get on base before the clout. Girardin came back after sav- ing the first game victory for Herrnstein to start the second game. His teammates clobbered Wild- cat starter Dale Pienta in the first inning scoring five runs and driv- ing Pienta from the mound. Tippery started the deluge after two were out with his second home run.
