Y.y .a fT t7 i 'WE HANDLE PESTS': Exterminator Battles Bugs } :By BARTON HUTHWAITE Battling bugs is Robert f. Opal's business. CLASSIFIED ADVER IT ING ' . E. h -Daily-Norman Jacobs BUG BATTLER-Robert Opal, pest exterminator, sits at his desk in a moment of rest before going out again on another call. F, m" Opal, a registered member of the National Pest Control Asso- ciation, holds the official title of pest control operator. He is more commonly called an exterminator. Exterminator Opal's base of op- erations for his never-ending bat- tle against household pests is a one room shop on Maynard Street. Strange bottles, machines and cans clutter the small room. Complicated Poisons Some of the larger containers bear such scientific names as Sul- foxide Pyrexcel 20, Emulsifiable Chlordane and Turdocide M-50. Others simply read "Danger! Rat Poison." An ancient desk, its shelves jammed with volumes of the "Journal of Economic Entomol- ogy" and "Rogues' Gallery of Im- ported Pests," rests in one corner. Above the desk hangs a certifi- cate stating, "the aforementioned has attended ten annual Purdue Pest Control Operators' Confer- ences." "We handle all sorts of pests," Opal said, leaning back in his chair. "Cockroaches, bedbugs, fleas and moths; we handle them all. We also rid homes of such nuisances as rats, mice and squir- rels." Exterminators Have Bible Picking up a pamphleV entitled Pest Control Operator's Guide, Opal continued, "This is the Bible of the business. It tells what the servicemen should do, act, and look like. "The pesthcontrol operator's method of handling a case is somewhat like a doctor's," Opal explained. "The doctor examines the patient, diagnoses the case, prescribes a cure and administers treatment. "A good exterminator follows this same general pattern. He in-, spects the premises, identifies the pest, recommends the cure and proceeds with the treatment. These are the basic steps of pest control," Opal said. Attends Conferences Exterminators who belong to the KPCA are expected to attend several conferences each year on pest control. "Last year, I wentI to meetings at Purdue Univer- sity, Michigan State University and also one here at the Univer- sity," Opal said. "Ann Arbor has the same com- mon pests that are found any- where else in the Midwest," Opal smiled. The equipment used to combat them is not very complex. "The specialization is not in the equipment, but in the materials that we use," the exterminator explained. "The most common insects are fleas, bedbugs, cockroaches and moths," Opal said thoughtfully scratching his head. Others, such as rats and squirrels, are less common. Opal explained that he would have to leave. "I've got another job to do," he said. He picked up his chemicals and sprayer and left to continue his battle against the bugs.
