Each of these 12" L.P.'s only p 2 98 CHICAGO (P)-Sugar Ray Rob- inson brushed back the years for one electrifying burst of violence Wednesday night to knock out middle weight champion Gene Fuilmer with a left hook to the jaw in 1:27 of the fifth round at Chicago Stadium. Thus Sugar Ray became the first man ever to win the world's mid- dleweight title four times. Robinson, a 3;/2 to 1 underdog, softened up the 25-year-old chai- piop with two solid right-hand punches to the body, then drove home a terrific left that dropped Fullmer to the deck. . First Stop in 44 Bouts Writhing on the canvas, Fullmer attempted to get up. But he jack- knifed back on his face and was counted out by Referee Frank Sikora, the first time he had been stopped in his 44-bout career. With one flash from his glorious past, the man who once was called "the greatest fighter pound for pound in the world" avenged his unanimous decision defeat by the sturdy bull-boy from West Jordan, Utah, at New York's Madison Square Garden Jan. 2. This was a different Robinson from the inept, faded workman whorclutched5desperately in an effort to go 15 rounds only four Imonths ago. The bull-necked champ from the West had been banging away at Robinson's body and charging in fearlessly under Robinson's spor- adic fire in the earlier rounds. In fact, Fullmer had piled up a slender 19-18 lead on points on the cards of all three officials in the first four rounds. Referee Sikora had warned Fullmer for a cracking left hook that strayed low in the third round, but he did not take away any points under the "five-point must system" that is used in I1i- nois scoring. Robinson To Meet Basilic Robinson's dramatic upset vic- tory, a startling form reversal from his January effort, earned him a July match with welter- weight champion Carmen Basilio that probably will be signed soon for the Yankee Stadium. When Robinson finally got his chance to turn it on Wednesday night, he let loose with both hands with deadening effect. Although the record books say Robinson willhbe 37 Friday, he in- sists his correct age will be 36. In any event, he punched with his effectiveness of old in that one blinding flurry that ended Full- mer's reign at one day short of four months. Tired before Fifth As Robinson stretched out iri his corner gefore the fifth, he looked tired. When Fullmer flailed away with a wild right,Robinson stepped away and slammed a hard right to the body. After another Fullmer right hand missed its mark, Robinson dug a right deep to the body and followed with another right to the body, As Fullmer straightened yp, Robinson pulled the trigger on the left hook that ended it. Musial, who'batted .310 last sea- son has really started off with a bang this year. Against Chicago two days ago, Musial belted his 2,800 hit of his career. Williams hit .345 last season, and he is currently blasting at a .395 pace. According to the new ruling Williams or any other hitter will need 477 titalat bats including walks to be in competition for the batting title. As one looks down the list of the top hitters in each league he will see that there are only familiar names in the lists. There is not one rookie at this time who is in contention for the batting title. Joe Adcock, who blasted 38 home runs last year to tie for second in this department has already belted five.
