'AGE TWO THE MICMHGAN DAILY THURSDAY, MAY 2,1957 vw English Numbering, Concentration Plans Revised I Il (Continued from Page 1) direction of Prof. Warner G. Rice, set up the new survey. Survey one, dealing with English literature from its beginnings to 1780, will be initiated in the 1957- 58 school year. This course can be elected by juniors or seniors after they have fulfilled their first and second year prerequisites. Second Survey in 1958 Survey Two is expected to be in effect in 1958-59. When this course is offered, the student will have his choice of either studying Survey One, or Survey Two which deals with English Literature from 1780, to the present. This also is a two semester course with each semester worth three hours. If he desires, a student can take both surveys. Besides this sequence of either survey one or two, the student must take two authors courses valued at three hours each. He may take these courses before or after he takes one of the surveys and if he desires, take the two in sequence or simultaneously. Courses Outside Survey The two authors courses must fall within the chronological range not covered by his survey. In this way the new program broadens the student's scope of study. Also a six hour sequence in a cognate course and a three hour free elective are needed to fulfill the specialization requirements. In addition to the change in program, the course numbers of the entire English department have been altered. Rather than having courses labelled more or less in order of difficulty and in no other way, the department has organized them in ranges of study and then in degree of severity. As before, courses numbered be- low 100 are for underclassmen, those between 100 and 199 are for upperclassmen and graduate stu- dents, and courses numbered above 200 are for graduate students. The last two numbers of the course number will indicate the field. For example, courses num- bered in the 20's, 120's and 220's are composition courses, for un- derclassmen, upperclassmen and graduates, respectively. Many of the courses will change with the number, but still most subjects remain primarily the same. Such courses pertaining to underclassmen: 45, now 69; 78, now 68; and 60, changed to 50. In the 1957-58 catalogue, English classes are listed by their new numbers with the old class num- ber; in parenthesis next to it. Also, for convenience, description of the classes are being given.
