XARY 10, 1957 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE. FIV UARY10,195 THEMICIGA DAIY PGE I1R Dean Bacon To Weigh Sorority Quota Raise All Together Now-Kick! By ROSE PERLBERG A plan to raise sorority quotas goes to the Dean of Women's Office for approval early this week. The measure, which would be- come effective this semester, gives each house an opportunity to in- crease the present resident maxi- mum of 60 coeds to. 65. It was tentatively approved at a repent Panhellenic Board of Delegates meeting., A project of the Panhel Re- search Committee, (study group formed to deal with Panhel con- stitutional revisions after spring rushing was established) the quota increase issue has been under con- sideration for months. Plan Follows 'U' Growth Says Diane Duncan, chairman of the Research Committee's Quota Division: "What we're trying to do is keep up with the growth of the University as a whole." She cited the establishment of -r two new sorority chapters on cam- pus last year as "the beginning of meeting campus requirements," adding that a quota increase would be still another step in that direc- tion. Under the new plan, (which would supersede the quota estab- lished in the early 1940's) Miss Duncan points out that houses would: (1) be able to pledge more rushees and (2) balance out finan- cial losses incurred from the short- er pledge period that must follow a spring rushing schedule. Small Houses Gain Nothing The plan, she added, is an indi- vidual matter, since each house must decide if it is able to meet the responsibilities of accommo- dating additional coeds. Objections, she remarked, are therefore based mainly on the fact that some of the smaller houses, with facilities too limited to allow them to fill the present quota, would not benefit. However, in discussing that problem, delegates from such sor- orities agreed that as long as the plan was advantageous to Panhel as a whole they would be willing to accept it. Pharmacists Plan Apothecary Ball, Drugs and druggists will take over the League Ballroom from 9 p.m. to midnight, Friday, for an evening with "Modern Pharmacy". Apothecary Ball, annual spring dance of pharmacy students, will feature music by Don Kenney and his orchestra. Lambda Kappa Sigma, Phi Delta Chi and the American Pharmaceutical. Asso- ciation are sponsors. Their straw vote of approval allowed the committee to turn it over to Dean Bacon for the Ad- ministration's consideration. Dean Kept Informed Miss Bacon, remarked Panhel President Carol DeBruin,-has fol- lowed the progress of the plan, and has been informed of discus- sion about it and sorority mem- bers' opinions. If apprdved by the Dean of Women's Office, Miss DeBruin says, the plan will be submitted to Delegates at their meeting Thurs- day "for minor suggestion and detail discussion," before it be- comes a part of the group's Consti- tution. At the Thursday meeting, Miss DeBruin added, delegates will also be considering proposed Rushing Calendar changes. Calendar Needs Approval Another project of the Research Committee, the new calendar for the 1958 spring rush is still in the 'planning stage. Now sketchily drawn up, it has been presented to delegates and discussed in individ- ual houses. Miss DeBruin says that a tenta- tive vote of approval Thursday' will enable the Committee to send the calendar to the- Dean of Women's Office for the "official stamp of approval." -Daily-Norm Jacobs JGP TRYOUTS-Jane Abeshouse, Mally Dwan, Betty Edson, Joan Krasberg, Nancy Willard and Angela Suina run through a song'and dance routine at Junior Girls Play tryouts held yesterday afternoon in the League.
