PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, APRM 28, 1957 ' PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY SUNDAY, APRIL 28,1951 ~ BUSIEST ROOM ON CAMPUS: Drama Office Prepares for Season CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING By DIANE FRASER As the University prepares forI its annual Drama Season, May 13 to June 15, the drama office in the League becomes one of the busiest rooms on campus. On the telephone, Mrs. Lucille W. Upham, manager, is making arrangements for costumes while her assistant, Mrs. Rose Arbour, is busily sorting the stacks of re- quests for season tickets. "This is going to be a very exciting year as it is the first time we've presented a musical," Mrs. Upham said as she set down the phone. "We are just tingling about the present season-and it gets more exciting every tamc I contact flew York about staging or de- signs." Musical Interests Mrs. Upham has worked with the Drama Season since it began in 1930. She has been business manager for the past 10 years. Mrs. Upham declared the musi- cal, "Lady in the Dark," is adding great interest to the Drama Sea- son. Many people have expressed interest in the season for the first time because of this musical, she said. The Drama Season always want- ed to present a musical, and they felt that this year was perfect for the ambitious undertaking. "This year the world is a bit gloomy and the people seem to want something entertaining, ex- citing and beautiful," the manager explained. Dancers Coming Carol Bruce, well-known musical comedy star in New York and London, will play the lead. Scott McKay, currently staring in "Brig- adoon" on Broadway, will play opposite her. For this production, six dancers and a chorus of eight are being brought from New York. An orch- estra will also be used for the first time in the history of Drama Season. Responding to popular demand, a mystery, "Witness for the Prose- cution," will be presented for the first time in eight years. "In doing 'Witness for the Pros- ecution', we have one of the best thrillers in years," Mrs. Upham commented. It ran with success in both New York and on the road for the past two years. Attractions Vary The third production, "The Sleeping Prince," is a romantic comedy, "beautiful to look at and fun to watch," according to the manager. Francis Lederer, who played the lead in the West Coast performances of this play, will also play the lead here. "The fourth production," Mrs. Upham remarked, "is extremely novel as it is an adaptation of a Viennese classic 'Anatol'. The Af- fairs of Anatol brings to Ann Ar- USED CARS 48 NASH under 50,000 miles. UPHAM ...Season Manager bor the noted star Uta Hagen as lead." Leaning forward in her chair, Mrs. Upham called "The Reluc- tant Debutante" a fitting finale for the season, saying the gaiety present in Ann Arbor during com- mencement week is matched in the theatre. The lead, Edward Everett Horton, is returning to Ann Arbor and should convulse his audience with the magic of his comedy-style in this new farce."
