PAG TWn THE MCMGAN DAILY" SATURDAY, APR . ?7, 19" r TrM H N A SAA-A--v CALENDAR COMMITTEE: 'Panhel Never Met SGC About Rushing Schedule' Senate Refuses Raise For University Budget I I 4 1 (Continued from Page 1) deal of planning, and rushing would come during preparation. She declined further comment, except to explain that everything reported so far was unofficial and indefinite. Panhel will try to have its rationale ready before the SGC meeting Wednesday night, she said. An unnamed sorority represen- tative told The Daily -that during the meeting in which the proposal was voted on, the women were told new calendar aspects had been found which would make spring rushing difficult. Included in these were a possible shortening of the inter-session, a delay of reported grades, added time needed for tabulation with IBM machines, and conflict with campus activities. However, in a recent University calendar committee report it was stated the literary and engineer- ing colleges used the period be- tween semesters for discipline and deficiency cases and would be un- likely to change the program in the coming year. Miss Duncan told The Daily t research committee will be pr senting the December rush cale dar to SGC at the same time requests fall rushing for Panh Dean of Women Deborah Bac declined to comment on the sit ation. "The proper time for V case to be presented," she sa "is when Panhellenic goes befo its student govenment." Ann Arbor Panhellenic Ass ciation President, Mrs. Earl Hod son claimed she knew nothi about the proposal until Dean B con told her yesterday. the re- an- it iel. on tu- he tid, ore so- c- (Continued from Page 1) stantially raising student fees, limiting enrollment to the present level of 22,000 or not granting across the board faculty raises, Niehuss said. Senate committee members say they based their recommendation on a 25 per cent increase in stu- dent fees and payment of utility costs by dormitory residents. Working on a formula of dollars per student, they contend they have not only provided sufficient funds, but even an increase. "If the University was able to operate last year on an average of $1249 per student, they should be able to work on the substantial in- crease to $1298 per student that we granted," committee member Sen. Rober E. Faulkner (R-Colo- CittemaC'uiI4 Tonight at 7:00 and 9:00 Sunday at 8:00 only "JULIUS .CAESAR with MARLON BRANDO JAMES MASON DEBORAH KERR ARCHITECTURE AUDITORIUM 50c gma) said. ng 3 Niehuss countered that the $1298 figure was obtained not by dividing solely into the commit- tee's recommended appropriation, but into the sum of both the rec- ommendation and the amount re- ceived from student fees. Actual- ly, the committee is only recom- mending about $1209 per student he said. While committee members used the over all per capita formula in their estimates, the University to- tals their requests from needs ex- pressed by the various schools and departments, Niehuss said. pace with Civil Service raises and the cost of living. Merit Increases "We will still be able to provide merit increases, but the funds are not very adequate for general raises if we take in more stu- dents," he said. In'a caucus yesterday morning before the final report of their bill committee members granted increases to some institutions for salary boosts. Michigan State University was granted an additional $500,000, primarily for raises that were overlooked for employees in the Agricultural Extension Service. State's overall appropriation was recommended at $25,719,300. Increases Allowed Increases of $100,000 were al- lowed to Western Michigan Uni- versity, $25,000 for Central Michi- gan College, $45,000 for Ferris In- stitute and $7,000 for the College of Mining and Technology at Houghton. To provide the University's de- sired salary increases and enroll- ment increase of 21,000 students, Niehuss said that the funds would have to come from a 47 per cent tuition boost. He called an in- crease of this size "highly unlike- li:n ly." A member of the Board of Re- gents, which controls University tuition, Eugene Power of Ann }Ar- bor, declared yesterday that "I'm opposed to tuition increases, for they're just a drop in the bucket. Our society just can't afford to price students out of the market." Increases 'Necessary' Sen. Porter declared that the increases were justified and neces- sary, especially for out-state stu- dents. Members of the house also in- dicated yesterday that a student fee increase was necessary. "However, I'm not discouraged that the legislature will not take care of the needs of the Univer- sity," a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, Rep. James Warner (R-Ypsilanti) said. Supporting the formula, Sen. Faulkner pointed out that in us- ing it, the committee allowed a five per cent increase for salaries. "That's all they can expect to get," he said. Niehuss said the University wants to give a four per cent in- crease for merit and promotion and provide six per cent general raise for faculty members to keep PHOTOGRAPHIC SUPPLIES USED MINOLTA AUTOCORD Twin lens reflex, New $99.50.
