PAGE TWO TAE MICHIGAN DAILY FRIDAY, APRM 26, 1957 PAGE TWO THE MICHIGAN DAILY I~7RIDAY, APRIL 26,1957 HERB WANDER: Judic Chairman Not for Mickey Mouse U IED By RICHARD TAUB Herb Wander, '57, is not a man for "Mickey Mouse" organizations. And, judging by his accomplish- ments, he's not one for "Mickey Mousing" around either. Since his arrival at the University, he has become a Phi Beta Kappa mem- ber, editor of the 'Enslan, Chair- man of Joint Judiciary Council and active in his fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau. Wander may have made history on the 'Ensian. He was the first junior to hold the position of edi- tor of the year book in as long as anyone can remember. Explains Promotion With characteristic frankness, he explainshis promotion might have come about because he was the best person or because "there was nobody else." Herb probably came to school because of the 'Ensian. He had worked on his year book at West- ern Hills . High School in Cincin- nati and enjoyed it. He knew peo- ple who were active on the'Ensian and got the impression from them that it was "a pretty good book," one worth working for. He found his work valuable, more so than in many other ac- tivities. In some organizations, "after learning how to operate a mimeograph machine or keep books, what have you got?" he asked. Can Be Creative "With the 'Ensian you have a chance to be creative," he said. We can't run a box marked "cor- rection" the nxt day." The book Just comes out once a year. Almost bereft of responsibility after his term with 'Ensian, Herb looked around for something worthwhile to do. He then petitioned for Joint Ju- dic. The job isn't time consuming, he explaned, as we meet once a week. He felt the council would give him a chance to work with HERB WANDER - Chairman of the Joint Judiciary Council, Herb Wander, '57, thinks over his past four years at the Univer- sity. Ex-Editor of the 'Ensian, Wander is "taking it easy" this year. -disagreement comes about be- cause of different emphasis. In a drinking case, for example, each of us may look at the viola- tion differently. One person may emphasize the fact the violator drank at all, another that he drank too much, another that he disturbed the neighbors, and may- be even another just because he got caught. But even so, he said, we usually agree about what should be done Herb waits on tables at the Zeta Beta Tau house for meals, and helps correct blue books for the econ. department. Lives Out He feels he is quite active and interested in the house, although he lives out, as do most of the oth- er seniors. He has a part in the "Spring Weekend skit," "ZBT will win - I hope," he added. He is also president of the "pygmy club," an organization made up of the shortest men in the fraternity. Herb hasn't found the final half of his senior year too difficult, and is now looking forward to law school next year, at either Har- vard or Yale. Feels Satisfied Herb feels he has gotten a' great deal from his college career. I gues the old saying is true, he said, you do get out of school what you put into it. "At a big University you have to get out and meet people. If you don't you are completely lost.", "Of course," he concluded wry- ly, "I don't need much sleep eith- er." Stanley Quartet To Give Concert The Stanley Quartet with Wil- liam Stubbins, clarinet, will give a concert at 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday April 30 in Rackham Lecture Hall. "Quartet in G minor," Op. 74, No. 3 by Hayden, "Quartet No. 1," Op. 8 by Karel Husa, and "Quintet in B minor," Op. 115 by Brahms will be included in the program. I thought if somebody was going to hear cases of students violating University regulations and give' out punishments, it might as well be me, he said. Forms Policy Through Joint Judic he has helped to form University policy in discipline areas, and has had the opportunity to work- closely with members of the administra- tion, he said. Herb sees Joint Judic not as a court but as a council. The group can help people who have gotten out of line - not try and punish them," he feels. Most cases are just of poor judgement, he noted. Drinking and driving violations head the list of council cases. However, it has heard violations on anything from stealing books from the li- brary to stealing cars. Cases Different No two cases are ever alike, he emphasized. In the paper, all drinking violations sound alike. But there are always different ele- ments, he declared. Driving regulations have been the cause of a great many viola- tions this year, h mentioned. How- ever, most have been concerned with people who are old enough to have a car here, but who haven't registered. The council has been lenient in these cases. Not many people have been caught, he added, who actually ciolated the purpose of the rule- driving a car when under 21. Herb feels Joint Judic is an ex- cellent group. We almost always agree on the essentials - he said ROOM AND BOARD ATTENTION SUMMER BOARDERS.
