With all other American League teams idle, the victory gave last year's cellar-dwelling A's undis- puted possession of first place for at least one day. Uses Four Pitchers Freshman manager Jack Tighe used four pitchers in a vain effort to choke off the hard-hitting Kan- sas City club and earn his first major league victory. But the Ath- letics got to two of them for 10 hits, including home runs by Hec- tor Lopez and Harry Simpson and [a triple by Bob Cerv. That was enough to win. Former Tiger Ned Garver, who came to Kansas City in a Decem- ber trade, was wild at the start and spotted Detroit three runs in the first inning on a hit batsman, two walks and a base-clearing double-byRayBoone. Shell Starter The A's picked up two runs and shelled Detroit's starter, Jim Bun- ning, from the hill in the first,r then went ahead in the third on Lopez' and Simpson's homers off reliefer Duke Maas who absorbed the defeat. Garver again got into trouble in the fourth and was lifted for Bur- nette who gave up only two hits for the remainder of the game. He fanned two and gave up three walks in earning the victory. Garver allow only four hits, but walked three men and hit Jim Finigan's shirt. He struck out two. Boone Singles In the fourth, the veteran, who is attempting a comeback after being out nearly all of last season with arm trouble, gave Boone a lead-off single; then, with two out, Maas singled, scoring Boone, and Garver was jerked. Burnette end- came back in its half of the fourth to score the winning run. With two men out, Cerv bounced a triple off the right field fence and scored on shortstop Joe DeMaestri's single to left. Musial Hurt, Long Streak Endangered ST. LOUIS (AP)-Stan The Man Musian, just 47 games from the National League consecutive game record, has a muscle injury in his back and may miss the St. Louis Cardinals' home opener with the Chicago Cubs tonight. The 36-yr.-old Musial suffered the injury during his big 4-for-4 hitting day in the opening victory at Cincinnati. Yesterday's game with the Red- legs was rained out, giving Musial a break. Trainer Doubtful "If we had played," trainer Bob Bauman said, "I don't think Stan would have been able to go." Bauman said whirlpool and ul- tra-sonic treatments helped some- what, but added "the way it look- ed, I'd say he's doubtful. "Still, knowing the man and his intense, desire to play, I reserve judgment" Forty-Seven from Record With 775 straight games behind him, Stan is closing in on Gur Suhr's league record of 822. Manager Fred Hutchinson didn't learn of the injury until after the game and Musial just shrugged; his shoulders when Hutch asked him why he hadn't been informed before. WILLIAM NO 2-0035 By The Associated Press The Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants may be opening the season for the last time at Eb- bets Field and the Polo Grounds when the major leagues hold their "second openers" today before crowds estimated to total 200,000 fans. Actually, one of the eight games on today's schedule shouldn't be classified as an opener. Washing- ton, which stole a march on the field with a special presidential opener Monday, starts its regular A night schedule at Griffith Stadi- um against Baltimore. Brooks Come Home With all the early spring con- versation about moving Dodgers to Los Angeles still echoing around the league, the Brooks come home to play Pittsburgh. Despite the 12-inning victory over Philadelphia on Gino Cimo- li's home run Tuesday night, only 15,000 are expected to see the Dodgers' Sal Maglie (13-5) face Luis Arroyo (3-3) or Vern Law (8-16) of the confident Pirates. The Dodgers have still another opener next Monday when they play the Phils at Jersey City. Don Zimmer's two hits against the Phillies helped the Dodgers ->. forget the absence of the injured Pee Wee Reese. Reese will be out for several more days although he will be on hand at Ebbets Field to accept the Lou Gehrig Memor- ial Plaque from the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Don Newcombe will accept the 1956 most valuable player award from Warren Giles, National League president, and the Cy Young Award as top pitcher of both majors from Dan Daniel, president of the Baseball Writers Assn. Giles also will give souve- nirs to the Dodgers, commemo- rating their pennant victory in 1956. The Giants, thumped by Pitts- burgh in their first game and washed out of a second, face the Phillies at the Polo Grounds where 15,000 are expected. Ruben Gomez (7-17), who was to have worked yesterday, will op- pose Curt Simmons (15-10), who had a fine spring for the Phils. Ted Williams and the Boston Red Sox bring the New York Yan- kees home with them for a gala opener at Fenway Park where 30,000 are due to watch Frank Sullivan (14-7) try to top the Yanks' Johnny Kucks (18-9). Hoeft vs. Lemon Billy Hoeft (20-14), the left side of Detroit's two-ace pitching staff, vill do the honors for the Tigers at Briggs Stadium against Cleve- land's Bob Lemon (20-14). A crowd of about 47,000 is expected. Al Lopez makes his bow as new manager of the White Sox at Chi- cago's Comiskey Park with south- 2aw Jack Harshman (15-11f op- posing Alex Kellner (7-4) Kansas City's 32-yr.-old lefthander. The probable attendance is 25,000 paid. When Baltimore plays at Wash- ington tonight, it is expected that Ray Moore (12-7) will face Ted te Standings AMERICAN LEAGUE tY7 r S _A d ~i Abernathy (1-3), up for another chance with the Senators after winning 12 at Louisville. More than 40,000 fans will watch Lew Burdette (19-10) of the Braves face Hal Jeffcoat (8-2) of the Cincinnati Redlegs, who are supposed to fight it out for the National League pennant with Milwaukee and Brooklyn. The game has been sold out for weeks. The St. Louis Cardinals, fresh from a 17-hit party at Cincinnati, open at night against Chicago with 40-year-old Murry Dickson (13-11) opposing 21-year-old Moe Drabowsky (2-4) who was impres- sive last summer as a youngster fresh off the campus at Trinity College. About 20,000 are expected at Busch Stadium. Webb Takes Ring Decision CHICAGO (MP) - Spider Webb, who zoomed to a 7-1 ringside fav- orite in a quick shift of odds, last night had his hands full in taking a uanimous 10-round decision over left-hooking Randy Sandy in a savage brawl that left both fighters dripping blood. The Chicago stadium gathering! of about 1,500 fans booed the de- cision after the surprising Sandy gave Webb, third ranking middle- weight, ( one of his best scraps in the televised show.
