Pageantry, Ur Featured at F Frosh Weekend, the annual com petition between two teams of freshmen women, has in the pas inspired many varied tnemes. In 1952 the Maize Team chose "Moonshine Madness" as its theme, complete with cartoon characters from Al Capp's L'il Ab ner, an old fashioned general stor and hillbilly characters smoking corncob pipes. For the same year the Blue Team chose "Pardon My Politics" for its theme and th Wolvercrat Party as the University of Michigan political party. Publicity stunts ranged from a barrel parade staged by the Maize Team in which one unfortunate coed's barrel fell apart, to a moc election in front of Angell Hall. A horse draped in a blue blanket was entered as the "dark horse" candi- date for the Blue Team. Origin in the Twenties Frosh Weekend was begun as a freshman coed project in 1948 but had its origin in the Freshman Spread during the 1920's. "Th History of Music," given in 1924 is the first actual record of a freshman production. The pageant consisted of a series nusuaI Themes rosh Weekend f of dances given by freshman coeds t at the traditional Lantern Night. This program continued for nine e years until 1933. s Frosh Weekend has a three-fold n purpose. One goal is to unite the - freshman women in a project de- e signed to promote friendship and g cooperation. x Second, the project is designed :y to teach freshmen the value and e fundamentals of committee work. y Third, freshmen women become acquainted with the League and its a functions. e Mysterious Signs R As in years gone by, this year's k publicity for both teams features A mysterious signs. For the Maize s Team, a tightly closed hand with - yellow light seen between the fin- gers and the words, "Wonder Where the Yellow Went?", are dec- a orating the campus. For the Blue t Team, blue arrows dot every cam- n pus tree and building. e The teams will be judged on the , basis of ticket sales, program de- a sign, floor show and decorations. The object is to spend as little s money as possible. C ..
