Approved in 1953 Plans for the project were first - approved by Residence Halls Busi- l ness Manager Leonard Schaadt in the spring of 1953, however, con- - struction costs were prohibitively high to start the project at that _ time. - Construction was finally begun - on May 29, 1955 after East Quad worked out an agreement on fi- nancing the project with the Uni- versity. The plan of the project placed the construction of a library high on the list of the needs of East Quad. "The first and most essen- tial aspect is the furnishing of a room for good listening and good reading,' the plan said. Walls Completed By 1956, the basic walls and doors of the Operation had been completed but there was still a great deal to be done before the project became functional. The wiring and renovation of the equipment of WCBN-East Quad was completed during the fall semester of 1956 and the sta- tion could be moved from tem- porary quarters into 9, new stu-. dio. The radio station now includes a control booth, studio, office and : a room for record:; and equipment. Pianos Installed At the present time, the music rooms have been finished and pi- anos installed by the School of Music. The photography room has been completed and the photography club has moved into its new dark- room. Much of the initial difficulty encountered in the project was in financing. The solution of these difficulties is largely credited to the East Quad Council. East Quad, however, has derided that the Operation project will never be completed by embark- ing on a program of involving constant renewal and improve-4 ment.f COZY COMFORT-Attractive wall colors and light modern furniture provides quiet relaxation for users of East Quadrangle's new Charles H. Benzinger Memorial Library. The library is part of the Quad's basement renovation program-Operation Ransom. EI There's always a sale at BOB MARSHALL'S YEARd\ ~ '-- I m, 111117-1{":'sr.-tr1Fil4'+x '
