"Development of the oxygenator and the extra corporeal circula- tion technique was a team opera- tion," according to Dr. Morris and Dr. Milnes. Craftsman Machinist "The oxygenator was built by an excellent craftsman machin- ist," they added. "He is Hermann 'Roemer, superintendent of the physics instrument shop." Plastic is the primary material used in the oxygenator, because it is less apt to damage sensitive blood corpuscles. The oxygenator, costing under $250, stands 30 inches high and is eight inches in diameter. The Uni- versity of Minnesota pioneered this type of work. Improvements Coming "We hope to build a better oxy- genator," Dr. Milnes said. "And we are now in the process of de- veloping a new one, which would increase the maximum length of time for heart operations," he concluded. Thirty minutes is the maximum length of time a safe operation can be performed at present. By MARCIA TI 4MAS Intricate heart operations can now be performed with less dan- ger to patients. A new oxygenator, developed at the University, with a pump chan- nels blood around the heart, en- abling surgeons to operate while the blood continues to circulate. The machine is a combination of a bubble oxygenator, developed by the Thoracic Surgery Section of the Department of Surgery at University Hospital, and a com- mnercial pump. Lung Substitute Each part of the machine has a special function in heart opera- tions. The oxygenator is a sub- stitute for the lungs and the pump takes the place of the heart. Ties are placed around the ma- jor veins leading into the heart, thereby excluding the heart from the circulation process. Two small tubes then pick up the blood from the major veins and carry it to one chamber of the pump. From the pumping chamber it is driven to the oxygenator. Here TYPEWRIT ERS Bought Sald ,.. The oxygenated blood is then drawn by another pumping cham- her through a safety filter device assuring removal of all air bubbles, and sensitive fibrin particles. It is returned to the body by the fe- moral artery where the circula- tion cycleis completed. This process is continued until the operation is finished.
