FISH FUN: Local Aquarium Yields Interesting Experiences =- DIAL NO 2-2513 WHO GETS THE MILLIONAIRE? Four Pretty Sisters in a Gay Marrying Mood! By LANE VANDERSLICE For a fish, it's fun being tanked. It's also fun being in the aquar- lum business according to Frank McCormick, '55, a former psy- chology major at the University and owner of a local aquarium. "My interest in tropical fish be- gan when I bought a plant to decorate my room," he said. Adds Fish "The plant looked bare so I de- cided to buy some fish and a bowl. I got very interested in the fish, so interested that it was costing me too much money to buy them at retail prices," he mused. "So, when the chance came along three years ago to purchase the aquarium, there seemed to be no- thing to do but buy it. You might say the fish had me hooked," he smiled. The aquarium has provided him with many interesting experiences. Last summer he took a trip to the Guianas in search of animal life. Tarantulas Popular Among other things, he came back with some tarantula spiders which, for some reason, have seemed to sell very well at the University."I'm out of them now," he mourned, "but I hope to get more in soon." Tarantulas are not the only rare creatures that can be obtained at the aquarium. Baby elephants, tigers, or any animal which a per- son's taste and pocketbook per- mit can be ordered from the bearded aquarium owner. For people with weird senses of humor, piranhas, legendary in practically all jungle epics can be obtained for a modest $2.50 and up. "Hardly any troupe at all." McCormick relates. "They'll eat just about anything-hamburger, batter, other fish . ..." Some unusual specimens which McCormick has on hand include: blind cave fish from Mexico which, having lived in caves for their en- tire lives, no longer have eyes; fish which resemble sticks, a Sumatran catfish which looks like a diminu- tive sea monster, and a fearsome looking porcupine fish whose only means of defense are his looks and the ability to blow up to five times its normal size. Fish Forecast Weather ' McCormick commented that the recent tornado warnings were al- so forecast by his weather fish, so- called because they have bladders which expand and contract with atmospheric changes. His fish come from almost every country in the world. Java, Bor- neo, South Africa and South America are some of the romantic sources of the fish. Interest in obtaining a source of supply for tropical fish led to his trip to the Guianas, near the spot where Life took pictures for its re- cent rain forest article. No White Men For two weeks of his trip, he and his two companions didn't see one white mart. "We were in places down there where white men had only been one or two times before, he said. While in British Guiana they participated in a monkey hunt. An unusual sport, it can get quite involved. During the night, when all the monkeys were asleep in a tree, McCormick and his friends cut down all but one of the surround- ing trees. They then tied a rope to a prominent limb on the sec- ond tree. Monkeys Miss When the monkeys woke up and jumped for the limb, McCormick would pull the limb away and the monkey would fall into the wait- ing arms of their guide, who tried to stuff the monkey into a bag as fast as possible. "Sometimes the monkeys would come so fast that our guide would have monkeys under his arms and between his legs," McCormick laughed. In a few years, McCormick hopes to go to. Asia, again combining business with pleasure. "Besides being fun," he summed up, "the aquarium has provided me with the means of doing a great many things that I would not have been able to afford oth- erwise." IFC Gives New Honors At Banquet Outstanding contributors to Mi- chigan's Intrafraternity Council were honored for their work at IFC's Fraternity President's din- ner last week. The newly established Rushing Counsellors Award was presented for the first time to Cory Randell, '58, Leonard Shlain, '58, and Ted Rennell, '58. Selectihn of these three men was made on the basis of at least 30 hours devoted to the counselling program; recommendation by the IFC Rushing Chairman; and ap- proval by the executive commit- tee. "The award was instituted to provide more incentive for our rushing counsellors," Rob Trost, '58, IFC president said. "It has helped greatly in strengthening the program." Gold Key awards were presented to five men who had either served two yeat-s on the executive com- mittee or had been an IFC offi- cer. Timothy Leedy, '57BAd, Michael Barber, '57, Robert Trost, '58, Wal- ter Naumer, '57BAd, and Malcolm Cumming, '57BAd, received gold keys. A certificate of merit "in recog- nition of his achievements on be- half of IFC" was presented to Dean of Men Walter B. Rea. H. Se- ger Sleifer, national secretary of Chi Psi fraternity, also received a certificate of merit. Silver key awards were given on the basis of one year service on the executive committee or for com- mittee chairmanships. Those receiving silver keys were: George Googasian, '58, Bob Stahl, '58, Fred Wright, '59. Rick Levitt, '58, Mike Jackson, '58, Stew Gor- don, '58, Abba Friedman, '59, Ed Zeerip, '58BAd, and Jim Martens, '58. Former Junior IFC President Kent Vana, '59, and Fraternity Buyer's Association officers Vic Carlson, '57BAd, Bob Talley, 58, and Fred Sheldon, '58, also re- ceived silver keys.
