PAGE TWO I'm MICHIGAN fDAILY FRTDAY, MARCV 29, 1957 a PROF. FOX: Rural Scho Require Co A big problem for Michigan edu- cators is placing school districts on a more efficient and financially sound basis, Prof. Robert S. Fox director of the University School, said recently. Although consolidation of schools is important, particularly in rural school districts, transportation problems may make this plan un- wise, Prof. Fox declared. By consolidating schools, he ex- plained, a sounder financial base will be obtained which in turn will lead to higher quality educa- tion. ,1 11 t ;. ;+ .; .; :, ol Districts nsolidation "Especially in the Upper Penin- sula where distances between com- munities are much greater," the professor explained, "many small schools will undoubtedly need to be continued." "The statistics clearly indicate that across the country rural chil- dren have less adequate education as measured by variety of oppor- tunities, number of specialized classes, caliber of teaching, as well as buildings and equipment," he pointed out. According to Prof. Fox the small school outlook is not all bad.
