V 4 y Be gentle as a Iamb in LINGERIE from VAN BUREN By CAROL LEVINE As the last March wind sub- sides and the sun begins to peek over the clouds, a coed just as naturally turns to Spring and a new wardrobe. However beautiful and stylish an outfit may be, it is not com- plete without matching accessor- ies. Color change has always been a sign of Spring. This season the de- signers have presented us with new and exciting pastels. Mauve pink and lilac are particularly prominent. Of course, the old standards, navy and gray, will still be popular. More and more emphasis will be given to scarfs. Notably dif- ferent is a lined, double layer silk taffeta and ombre silk chiffon scarf. Coming in either blue or pink, it can serve many purposes. In a matter of seconds it can be converted from just a fill-in to a glamorous boat neckline. Large chiffon and silk scarfs in pretty pastel combinations will add beauty to any plain neckline. A ticular pouch in beige is decor- ated with large brass buttons. For the shorter gal who de- sires a smaller bag, designers sug- gest a black patent and plastic clutch bag or a calfskin box bag in either navy or red. Pretty hands need pretty gloves. In an array of pastel colors, gloves will range from the classic short length to the glamorous elbow length for evenings. White kid- skin gloves are always a favorite among party-goers. To be just a bit different, stores are featuring two-faced short kid skin gloves. Only the back is col- ored. The palm remains white. Although the weatherman prom- ises a warm Spring, fashion de- signers are taking no chances. Capes in both neutral and match- ing pastel colors, in cotton or bulky knits will be displayed in i BUCKLES IN VIEW-on shoes that stretch a point all th ne pr fir fit frc evf Pan ties, Bras, Girdles, Slips in Soft Feminine Shades to Compliment Your New Spring Wardrobe BY ANNE O'NEAL The smartest step forward this spring is tapered-toe shoe. The pointed toes for milady's shoes range from the very sharp point to the maxim, or inter- mediately tapered toe seen most frequently. The maxim shows the foot slimming point of high fashion and yet is a little more conventional than thehextreme point. University coeds choose the pointed toe over the old style rounded toe, and seem to prefer the maxim to sharper point. Just as it has dictated other fashions, "My Fair Lady" has a pronounced influence on shoes, seen especially, in the Fair Lady heel, a delicately curved style, intermediate in height between the high stilletto heel and the very small illusion heel. The Fair Lady heel is indica- tive of the growing popularity of low heeled shoes instead of dressy flats. Noting the trend, many shoe companies that formerly special- ized in fiats now offer low heeled shoes., Throughout the country, the ill- usion heel is more popular than the stilletto, but sales to coeds show no definite trend. Something of a novelty, and yet still pointing toward the "My Fair Lady" influence, is a shoe with a vamp extended up the arch of the foot and lined with a double row of buttons, reminiscent of the highbutton, sharply pointed shoes of Grandmother's day. Grand- mother's pointed toes were un- comfortable, but modern shoe designers have slimmed the toe to keep the foot happy. The leather for this spring's shoes has been treated in a num- ber of different ways that make it excitingly different. One of the most popular finishes is pebbled leather, a broadtail kid which has been shrunk to one-third its orig- inal size. One of the most expen- sive leathers to process, the result is a very softly wrinkled leather which fits the foot snugly. Corkette, a processed calfskin- suede, is soft, flexible and seen generally in warm poppy or beige tones. Something new has now been done to the old favorite ,patent leather. This spring sees the intro- duction of pave' patene, a grained surface leather seen often both in slender shoes and matching hand- bags. Large or small buttons, bows, buckles, or latticework on the vamp take on new importance this season as they emphasize the slim toe. Even the plain shoes are given a_ low square cut Italian vamp to serve the same purpose. The same scarf is shown with the background colors in navy and lilac. When something a little more demure is desired, the fashion consultants suggest a pretty peter- pan collar. Made of sheer nylon lace, thi collar compliments any sweater or basic dress. The little girl effect can be cap- tured with a big red bow at the neckline of a white blouse. For those a bit more conservative, there is a narrow monogrammed tie coming in all rainbow colors. To enhance the look of Spring, designers suggest a brand new stickpin. What could typify Spring more th~a flowers? This season blos- soms will be in full fashion. A bunch of daisies or lilacs, attached to any collar with a leaf stickpin, will add a sure breath of the com- ing season to any outfit. Belts will be featured this season in a wide variety of colors and styles. Contour belts will match both plain and printed blouses. To accent a slim waist, stores are suggesting a wide straw cinch belt in either red or black. Practical as well as fashionable are the new reversible contoured black patent leather and gray straw belts. Handbags are always big news and this year the trend will shift to large Straw pouches.
