However, the really wise miss does more than just hope; she gives the "young man's fancy" a push in the right direction by taking careful stock of herself and brushing up on beauty habits. A last-minute date and your hair's a mess. What to do? Turn down the date? Never! Perfume added to the setting water makes hair dry faster, and adds a sweet scent besides. March winds have a way of playing havoc with a hairdo and building up electricity in it. Usu- ally, th" first two (Idys after sham- pooing, when there is relatively little oil in the hair, present the most difficulty. Creme Shampoo . . Tackle the problem with a creme rinse. Use a mild shampoo and rinse thoroughly before applying the rinse. A soft-bristled hair brusn and a flexible large-tooth comb will reduce friction. Well-groomed hair demands a well-groomed face, and after one o those endless eight-to-five days in class. mouths have a way ,of looking as though they'd never heard of lipstick. Beauty -conscious coeds apply powder to their lips before whip- ping out the tube; the powder pro- vides a lasting base and the lip- stick stays on much longer. "But my fingernails always break off; they just won't get long!" Neat hair and makeup are useless if the hands ar poorly- groomed, so to remedy this prob- lem, add a bit of unflavored gela- tin to your morning orange juice. Gelatin is rich in calcium, and will strengthen the nails. Bulge Battle . . Will your newly-embellished grooming have a newly-slim fig- ure to set it off to advantage? It's starchy dorm food versus spring sheaths in the Battle of the Bulge! Some girls make a game out of dieting by buying a dress in the size they'd like to be, and setting their goal at being able to wear it. For successful calorie count- ing, the trick is to eat slowly; you can fool your stomach into believ- ing you're eating more than you actually are. ---~- 11 1 All-Weather Coats Protect, Look Smart By MARY BETH GODFROY "Into every life, some rain must fall." This old expression is particu- larly true, in the literal sense, to coeds who attend the University. Ann Arbor has long been known for its monsoon season and un- expected showers which trap stu- dents in Mason Hall without pro- tection for their trip home. The rainwear fashions for this spring are designed to provide ample protection from April show- ers and, at the same time, have the appearance of smart-looking coats. These two features are combined in the all-weather coats which are being shown more and more each season. Tweeds are a popular fabric, for these coats travel in any weather. Cotton poplin treated for water repellancy and styled to resist the wina is another fabric designers are using in these all-weather coats. High collars, push-up sleeves, patch pockets and belted backs add touches of excitement to these coats. Detachable capes are an- other feature that will be seen in this year's fashions. New Pink . ,. Pink appears to be a favorite color this season and many of these "disguised" raincoats will be shown in varying shades of this color. Beige, yellow and blue are, How About Your Vacation? CRUISE? Linings of these coats will add their spark of color to the fashions. Shimmering taffeta and calico in delicate prints will grace the inside of the coats. These raincoats are shown in two different shorty lengths as well as street length. Matching caps complement the outfit. Another version of the all- weather coat is the trench coat. This has been gaining steadily in popularity since its introduction and will continue to be very im- portant on the spring fashion scene. By S shoo G mor I or Ji lome? WHATEVER YOUR PLANS WE HAVE THE CLOTHES YOU NEED COATS- SUITS - DRESSES BLOUSES-SKIRTS-SWEATERS SHORTS - SLACKS SWIM-SU ITS -JACKETS skirts are the major media of this look. Tailored shirts, originally for men only, took a downward turn last year and grew to new dress lengths. Now this shirtdress has acquired an easy more feminine air. Slight- ly fuller sleeves and open necks (open as far as the wearer dares) help to achieve the noticeable change. The severity of the mas- culine-derived style has been softened with ruffles and bows. But the C-irt-waist still remains the same practical, good looking, easy to care for dress that won it previous popularity, Billowy Skirts Skirts for the shirtdress are ei- ther gathered or pleated. The lighter fabrics used this spring allow for greater fullness with less bulk. The male population, once op- posed to "mannish" clothes for women, must surely approve the feminine shirtwaist of this sea- son. Still holding their own in the fashion field are slim, willowy sheath dresses. However, the influ- ence of the new fullness is in evi- dence here too, for many sheaths feature balloon sleeves. The draped back, or "blousen", look, is also noticeable in the slim dresses. Sheaths Popular Many of the less dressy sheaths feature the slightly lowered, looser and thus to numerous occasions. In further accord with adapta- bility, the sheath has acquired an overskirt. Full, light skirts in matching color, perhaps with em- broidered or appliqued design, are gaining in popularity because they enable women to swiftly change the mood of their costume. Closely fitting bodices, often de- fined by bands of ribbon, predomi- nate more than ever since they compliment the extra fullness be- ing accented this spring. Feminine Frills Feminine frills are here to stay. Ruffles, lace, and bows are being shown on all types of clothes. Ruffled front "dandy" dresses, lace trim on collars and cuffs and soft bows at the neckline are favorites. Fabrics, colors, and patterns concentrate on complimenting femininity. Along with silk, eye- let, heavily embroidereA cotton, and synthetic fabrics are being used. Dainty prints and pastels, along with the traditional black and white are appearing. Many dresses take their own short jackets or sweaters for a change in occasion; contrasting or matching colors and prints seem the favorites, Most of the jackets are cut just to the midriff and button in the, back. Many allow a bow on the dress to peep through at the neck- line or just above the waist.
