Detail is concentrated on the backs and varies from a blousey 'type, cropped in with a wide band, to the paneled and pleated back. The straight tube-like lines of last year's spring coats have given way this season to softer and more feminine lines. Coats are not too flared but they are full enough to provide for the wearer's ease and comfort. Besides the classic pastels and navy, grey is popular for its ac- cessory matching ability. From softly rounded shoulders emerge either long tight fitting sleeves or full three-quarter dol- man sleeves. Contrasting lining in solid color, stripes, or plaid adds a fresh, spring-like effect. To achieve that extra look of glitter and elegance, women are turning ets and texture again to leather in jack- coats. Its soft and smooth gives the wearer a fetch- ing and feminine look. The pale pinks and blues and other pastels provide the spring look. Leather fashions vary from full-length coats with flared, straight or belted backs for formal attire to shortie jackets. Their sleevesnare long, tight, dolman, or full length bloused. Some coats have wide collars; others none at all. Jackets tie at the waist, fall straight or flare slightly. Light weight cotton poplin car coats in dark colors or pastels still rate high on the fashion list. Because of their fullness, they fit every sporting need. Irregardless of the occasion, formal or informal, the fashion trend is gradually turning to the softer, more feminine touch in coats. By CAROLINE MILLER Brightest light in this Spring's suit collection is the navy-blue flannel semi-fitted outfit with a look of casual softness. Trimmed with gleaming brass buttons, the jacket looseness achievesa flowing appearance. The skirt is slim. A white silk blouse with a large tie at the neck- line adds femininity. For travel wear a perfect suit has been designed in navy silk. Semi-fitted with a straight skirt and semi-box jacket, it is a re- minder of last season's full box jacket. With this crease-resistant and wrinkle proof material, the traveler steps from the airplane or train looking as fresh as when she started. It's practical in North- ern and Southern climes. For everyday wear, there are afternoon suits of knubby wool- ens. A cowl collar touch adds that flattering note to the wearer's neckline. It can be dressed up for the informal evening affair with a special necklace, scarf or flow- er. Related, extra charming in the designer's costume book is a blue tweed with a belted jacket. It can be worn with or without the belt and looks stunning either way. An interesting color combina- tion this year is beige and gray with a white pique collar. This different color grouping is fea- tured in a suit of a full softly pleated skirt with a short box type jacket. Accessories can be used to'dress up this outfit. Today's fashion-conscious wo- man is discovering the importance of capes this year. Suit capes are often detachable, making two completely different ensembles. Color-wise, standard greys and navy are still "the thing." A three- quarter length sleeved jacket with a pencil slim skirt in grey worsted flannel makes a fashion-perfect outfit for Easter. A navy linen suit piped in white linen across the short sleeves and Peter Pan collar will be setting a summer style vogue. A fitted jacket with a full soft- ly pleated, gored skirt in pink wool adds the light, spring touch to the wardrobe. By JACQUELINE STRANDBERG The newest thing in sportswear this spring is the look of casual, yet well groomed, femininity that French designer Chanel brought into prominence last year. The look consists of a soft blouse and nicely draped skirt. For the slender coed this look is ideal. The outstanding feature of this look is definitely the "blousen" blouse. These overblouses are of- ten tied at the waist with a soft bow. Sissie blouses are another deri- vation of the Chanel styling and they have gained immense popu- larity over the winter. For all their fr-ills and ruffles, the ma- jority of them are easy to care for. Dacron and cotton, a "dorm- tested" blend, seems to be most polular of the "no-iron" fabrics. The perfect complement for the featured blouses is the slim skirt in a light-weight, serviceable, good fabric. Sailcloth and a fine grade denim are being shown along with light wools in many stores. The Chanel look with its un- cluttered, soft lines should be ex- ceedingly popular with the ma- jority of coeds. Varied Color .. . Colors for this spring vary with the look being created. Chanel's look is achieved with dainty shades and a surprising lack of patterns. Often, too, she contrasts navy or black with white for a.striking ap- pearance. Dainty flowered prints have taken over the place that was held for some time by polka dots; although some of these are still seedl, they are now bigger and var- ied in color. Getting into the more sporty wear one finds that bright colors, lavish patterns and differ- ent combinations predominate. Casual pants, which range in length from the very short shorts to slim ankle length pants offer perhaps the greatest opportunity to express one's individualism with color. Coeds with a secret desire, and the right figure to wear bright pink and red pants will find a ma- jority of bermuda shorts and ca- pri pants that seem to cater to just such a wish. Then, there are the more sub- dued colors and prints for those who have no such aspirations, se- cret or otherwise. Playsuits are the newest thing on the spring scene in more cas- ual sportswear. These suits are one piece and come with or with- out matching skirts. Casual Set Expected to gain acceptance along with playsuits is the duo of T-shirt and bermuda shorts. T-shirts are very snappy this spring. Many of them are featured with bold stripes and sailor col- lars. Featured again are the "mix and match" ensembles that were so popular last year. New colors, with an accent on mauve-pink shades are Vombining into some truly beautiful matchmates. Combinations of blue and green, red and yellow, hyacinth and pur- ple are a few of the mixtures that seem to be high on the sales lad- > t l i, , > ,] ;1 gil MEMO TO ALL STU[ i you'll "cotton" to our colorful gloriously cool PACMAKRSFOR SMARr AMERICA M& W Thomas cotton sport coats K.i .......... ;ii:.-;t In woven-only-for-VT *< Repp Stripes, Blazer Stripes, Tartan Checks,< District Checks.
