But, fortunately ,for clothing slesmen, there are fad lovers, certain nationally circulated mag- azines and a hard core of self- styled men who, it is thought, set college styles by whim, design or accident. The style-setter at work is a sight to behold. One particularly illustrative example was seen in Boston during the fall cap season when an enterprising but other- wise illiterate individual wore a blue cap with a red feather to a Harvard tea one day. Feat her Caps By night the entir3 yard was a sea of blue caps with red feath- ers, and no bird could perch in safety if it had so much as a smidge of red in its tail. Winter brought the Texas Ran- ger boot fad to stanford, a small f midwestern college located in California. Although the exact origin of this somevhat peculiar fashion is unknown, by February it was im- :ad lovers and individualists possible, as one writer described the scene, to walk from the Infir- mary to the Dean's Office with- out seeing more Texas boots than greeted Pancho Villa during the more adventure-filled days of his lawless career. Ann Arbor Styles At Ann Arbor, students wear nondescript clothing, except for an occasional dude who keeps his blue blazer with brass buttons at hand. Mostly what is seen can perhaps best be described as an unpressed collection of khaki pants in assorted colors, faded raincoats, scuffed shoes, ragged scarfs, and crumpled handker- chiefs. Add to this an occasional tat- tered umbrella, torn brief-case, and mildewed hat and you have the faculty costume. Even at so-called formal dances, the number of really elegant plaid dinner jackets with red and black sash and tie is statistically small, even with random samples. Double-Breasted Suit The blue double-breasted suit, once exclusively relegated to the gangster set is now making a great comeback. It is reported that the interested observer cank see more of these unsightly spec- tacles at a dormitory dance than were noted at Al Capone's funeral. However dismaying the picture of a full room of blue double- breasted suits slightly fidgiting under the critical gaze of a full length mirror; it is nothing com- pared with the revolting sight of a solid corps of men marching off to class wearing coats held to- gether by little wood pegs firmly attached to little loops of rope stranded from carefully selected and aged hemp. Force of Public Opinion But gradually the public is be- ing button-holed into buying these contraptions and, in some circles, if you are not securely tied into your coat, you walk the streets accompanied by the scorn- ful gazes of looped and hooked friends. Most promising trend in this area is knickers. Although this costume has not yet achieved th very practical and comfortable popularity it deserves, it is hoped that, during the next few years, the so-called lunatic fringe of campus style-setters will continue to "push" knickers so that our streets will someday see a profu- sion of them, together with knee socks in pastel shades, grey and black. By ELEANOR GOLDBERG Spring hairdos are undergoing the first radical change in several years, as smooth, sculptured styles overtake the "shaggy" effect to make their striking appearance. The "long hair done up" styles are gradually losing popularity as coeds flock to beauty shops or to their roommates with the "nearest pair of scissors." French rolls, pony tails, buns and page boys are rapidly being "snipped off." Hair will take ors a "chiffony" twisting look which is casual and wavy, yet elegant. A new coiffure, called a variety of names, includ- ing "Cabochon," "Big Dipper" and "'Jeunesse" brings back a style of the late twenties with innova- tions. Wide soft waves will give the face a smooth sculptured appear-! ance. The hair is brushed back from the brow, dips over the cheeks and is turned up, rathert than under, in the back. 'Sculptured' Look Either bangs or a low side part c shows neatly around the face and across the back of the head. t- This hairdo is a complete re- t versal of the high front, short s back "Italian." It has been some t time since so novel a step in hair- s SHEIK YOUNG MEN-part of the indefinable mass SUMM ER FORMALS may pe worn. Women with very regular features may choose to brush it straight back with no part. The style which is being adopted rapidly by movie stars and fash- ion models, as well as women of fashion, creates a smooth crown, good for the new hats which cup the head with a deep effect.
