Always tough in the Williams Arena, Minnesota's last place standing will not fool the Wover- rnes. Minnesota has pulled many upsets in the past on its home ice, and the Wolverines are well aware of this. Dealt a harsh blow by the ruling of Don McIntosh being ineligible, Coach Vic Heyliger will try to fill the gap with sophomores Gary Starr and John Rendall. McIntosh was the leading Wolverine scorer in league play according to the latest tabulation, The team left yesterday after- noon by plane for Minneapolis. At take-off time it was expected that Starr would 111 in forr McIntosh, playing along side of Tom Rendall and Wally Maxwell. Rendall was expected to take over for Don Gourley on the third 'line. Michigan at the present time is in fifth place with five and one- half points. To represent the league in the March playoffs, the Wolverines must finish at least in second place. Denver now occu- pies that position, but only holds a two and one-half point advan- tage over Michigan. Minnesota seems to ze confront- ed with a problem that also faces Michigan State-it lacks a scoring punch. Only State has been more inept at getting the puck into the net. One bright spot on the Gophers' side is the season's performance of the two brilliant goalies, Jack McCartan and Don Vaia. Between them they have had more stops per game than the net-minders of any other school in the league. Both have earned a 2.7 composite average of goals scored against them per game, despite loose de- fensive play by their teammates. Both goalies will see action. The Wolverines will keep their eyes on Bob Turk who plays both center and wing. H-e is the Gophers' leading scorer up to the present time. While the Wolverines attempt to surge toward the top of the league in their fight for the play- offs, their opponents will also be trying to make some headway. League-leading Colorado College will play fourth-place North Da- kota, while the Spartans of Michi- gan State travel to Houghton to face the third-place Huskies of Michigan Tech.
